New Jersey
New Jersey:

Initially inhabited by Delaware Indian tribes, this land was first sighted by Giovanni de Varazano in 1524.

He was followed by Henry Hudson in 1609, and then, a series of Dutch and Swedish settlements along its coast.

George Washington and his Continental Army spent most of their time here - in constant battles with the British during the Revolutionary War. Their famed crossing of the Delaware and defeat of the British at Trenton was crucial to moral, and overall victory.

New Jersey was the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, and remains the site of historic homes and battlefields, and the monuments designed to reenact the state's vital role in America's struggle for independence.

New Jersey was home to at least three noteworthy inventions; Thomas Edison's light bulb, Samuel Morse and his telegraph, and John Holland's submarine. Football and baseball were first played in this state.

The modern urban areas of the northeast are today home to the vast percentage of residents. Here - directly across from New York City - industrial complexes, oil refineries and manufacturing industries drive the economy of the state.

New Jersey is famed for the Jersey Shore, and its numerous lighthouses and almost endless string of white-sand beaches and resort communities; for the fertile farmlands of the central and south, and for the boardwalk and casinos of Atlantic City

New Jersey

The New Jersey flag originated in 1787, and with the centered seal, was officially adopted in 1896.

The flag's field is a light, yellow (or buff) color. It was personally selected by General George Washington in 1779, and worn as a uniform color by his New Jersey Continental Line troops in the Revolutionary War.

The centered blue shield features three plows, the head armor of a knight, and a horse's head above.

The two women (right and left) represent the goddesses of Liberty and Agriculture.

The blue ribbon (bottom) includes 1776 (the year of independence) and the states's motto - Liberty and Prosperity.
