Louisiana: The French explorer Sieur de La Salle, the first to descend the Mississippi to its mouth, took possession "of the country known as Louisiana," and named it for the reigning monarch of France, Louis XIV. Soon after, it experienced a surge of growth and development as a French colony. It was later purchased from Napoleon I by the United States for $15,000,000. This most-charming state is rich in French heritage, famed for Mardi Gras celebrations, and renown across the planet for its tasty cajun food, and of course....the city of New Orleans.
The official flag of Louisiana was adopted in 1912. The centered white pelican represents self-sacrifice, and also the state's long-established role as a protector.
