Iowa's Historical Event's:
10,000 bc The first people appear in Iowa.
ad 1000 People migrate north into Iowa from along the Mississippi River.
1673 Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet enter the Iowa region.
1700-1750 Siouan-speaking Illinois and Iowa peoples are driven out by Algonquian-speaking Sac and Mesquaki.
1788 Julien Dubuque, Iowa's first white settler, begins mining lead near the site of Dubuque.
1803 The Iowa area is bought by the United States from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
1804 Sac and Mesquaki sign an agreement ceding lands to the U.S. government.
1832 Black Hawk attempts to reclaim land but is defeated by the U.S. government.
1833 The Black Hawk Purchase is concluded, setting off large-scale settlement in Iowa.
1838 The Iowa Territory is established.
1846 Iowa enters the Union as the 29th state (December 28).
1855 Iowa's first railroad line is completed between Davenport and Muscatine.
1874, 1876 The state legislature enacts the so-called Granger Laws to regulate railroads.
1917 Governor William Harding prohibits speaking foreign languages in public.
1933 Amana colonies form a community corporation.
1985 In the midst of a major farm crisis, the governor declares a state of economic emergency, putting into effect a temporary moratorium on farm foreclosures.
1988 A disastrous drought hits Iowa.
1993 Record flooding occurs along the Mississippi River.
