Paper Mario (N64) Review By Foxx Let’s face it, the N64 didn’t offer much in the RPG genre. Okay, Zelda was great, but what else? Quest 64? Give me a break! Paper Mario is a semi-sequel of sorts to Square’s Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Wouldn’t you believe it? The game begins as Mario embarks on a quest to save the Princess from that no good Bowser. It seems that Bowser has stolen an object called the Star Rod to make himself invisible. And to top it all off, he has taken the Princess to his Floating Castle in the sky. Mario must collect the Seven Star Spirits (who grant wishes) in order to save his “maiden fair.” Mario’s quest takes him though 7 different lands, each of which hides these legendary Star Spirits. RPG gameplay and battles are what makes this game Paper Mario and not Mario 64. Battles feature the use of obtainable items and power-ups in a turn based style, battle system. This game would best be described as an RPG/platformer. Mario moves through the worlds in a platform style, while interacting with characters, items, etc in an RPG style. Puzzles add to both the depth of gameplay and story. The graphics are what really make this game stand out. Characters are 2D paper looking cartoons (think PaRappa the Rapper) that show their thin edges when they turn. Sometimes, when Mario falls, he floats like a piece of paper. The backgrounds are 3D as can be. The presentation is absolutely splendid. Paper Mario, in my opinion, is one of the best titles on the N64.
