Big Sky Trooper (SNES) Review

By Foxx

Let it be said that I like bizarre games. Let’s just get that out in the open right now… okay… I feel better. That being said, Big Sky Trooper is an excellent game masked by a strange concept. Are you ready for the plot? Here it goes: Slimy slug aliens (who hate advertising, bones, franchising, etc) are taking over the galaxy and it’s your task to eliminate them. That’s right, they hate advertising… but who doesn’t?  Drink Pepsi.

You play the role of a Space Trooper (boy or girl), moving from planet to star system, ridding them of these slimy specimens. Here is a brief example of how the game is played: You begin on a spaceship (your HQ) where you manage the skies with the help of you trusty dog… err, computer, FIDO (Flexible Interactive Digital Omnicomputer). From there you move around the solar system, getting into entertaining space battles along the way. Mission orders are given. Slugs are destroyed. Fun is had by all. Yeah!

The bulk of this game takes place by means of planet, away missions.  This is where you destroy slugs, find items, solve puzzles, etc. Some of the puzzles are pretty challenging, but in a good way.  Once each planet is free of slugs, you can build franchise restaurants to ensure that they do not return.

Fans of platform, puzzle, and adventure games alike will find something entertaining in Big Sky Trooper.

Graphics:

Pretty good by SNES standards. They have a cartoonish look that seems to suit this particular game. The different varieties of enemies are great!

8.5

Sound:

Good stuff. It’s fun music to listen to, although the sound effects are a bit lacking.

Gameplay:

The gameplay works fine. You should have no problem moving around the worlds. Shooting those pesky slugs can be a trick at times.

8.5

Replay Value:

It takes a while to finish. Once it’s over you probably won’t pick it up for a while… but you will eventually.

Overall:

Big Sky Trooper is a nice change from the typical Super Mario, “seen it a thousand times,” platform game. The fun story and mission variety makes this game worth your time.
