Final Fantasy Marathon Journal 2-17-03 by RyThom I think Final Fantasy IV may have turned Jinx off to the FF Marathon completely. He's just not diggin' the game. Or maybe he is, but he's doing the smart thing and playing Counter-strike instead. At any rate, FFIV is taking far longer to beat than I thought. And this was supposed to be one of the shorter ones. To help make up for lost time, we've enlisted another member to help us out - Distrigon. Right now he's skipping ahead a little bit and is about 10% of the way through Final Fantasy VII. Maybe the three of us can get through this ordeal...maybe... 2-8-03 by RyThom Counter-strike. That's all I can say. It has pretty much killed the Final Fantasy Marathon for the majority of this week. I think I may have put three hours into FF2, and about ten times that many into CSing. I mean, why would I want to keep hitting the A button over and over again to get through a story I've read three times already when I could be head-shotting AWPers!? While the CS is quite addicting right now, im sure the novelty will pass once again and I'll be reduced to Final Fantasying. I think Jinx needs to update in here... 2-4-03 by RyThom Started Final Fantasy 2 right on schedule. From the looks of things, we'll be able to tear through this puppy by the end of a week also. In order to give you an idea of our progress through these games I'll have to use recent game events as time markers. If you've never played any Final Fantasy games, some of these events might come off as spoilers. If I ruin anything for you, feel free to yell at me, or just read carefully. I will try to keep the really cool events as secret as possible, just in case. I know if someone ruined that part in Final Fantasy 3 when Terra gets...*ahem*! Where was I? Ah yes...progress in Final Fantasy 2. I'm at the 4 hour mark now and we just finished off the second fiend, that big wimpy turtle, and those kids just...whoa! Almost ruined that for ya too! I'd better get to sleep before I do any more damage. 1-30-03 by RyThom We did it!!! At 9:30 pm January 30th, Jinx, Forsaken, and myself beat Final Fantasy 1. It was a long hard fight, but we finally made it through thanks to three days of non-stop playing, and lots of Kool-Aid. For those of you interested, we were only at level 30 when we smoked Chaos, Bors was doing a ton of damage with the Xcaliber, Lee doing roughly 600 damage with his bare hands, Jed using the Heal Staff every round, and Toth was rockin' everyone with the Masmune at the end. After the lengthy credits, Forsaken snapped a picture of myself with the ending screen. (to be posted soon) Heh...I was really happy. Even when I got the game when it first came out so many years ago, I never completed it. Here's the sad story: I just finished Tiamat for the second time in the Temple of Fiends but for some weird reason my game crashed. I did not hold reset when I pushed power (they aren't kidding when they tell you to do that!), and when I went to continue my game was wiped out. Well, tonight I completed a lifelong goal. Thus ends the first part of the GameAlliance Final Fantasy Marathon...tomorrow night we begin Final Fantasy II (or IV depending on what side of the lake you're on) . 1-30-03 by RyThom Well, we're at the Mirage Tower now. I think Jinx has the game paused on the second floor. If memory serves me right, we've got a long way to climb, but our troops are holding together nicely. Unfortunately, something came along that may hinder our progress slightly...Counter-Strike. Yes, a game that I was one more than 1337 at has come out of nowhere to completely addict me once again. I think Jinx is going to have to play the majority of today's session as I'm going to be hanging out on Dust for most of the day. 1-29-03 by RyThom Ah, such progress...but at what a cost. I think Final Fantasy 1 may have consumed most of my sanity. I do believe I've spent the last 5 hours playing this game non-stop. Not for food, water, or bathroom...nothing but hitting the A button for the greater part of the afternoon. I don't think the music for this game will ever be able to be flushed from my mind, and its only a matter of time before I walk down the hall and swear I saw a pack of FrWolves at the other end. The upside to this, is that we just gave Kraken a sound spanking and are onto Tiamat's tower after only two days of playing. The party is in great shape, about level 27 or so with rockin' weapons and armor. Almost there... 1-29-03 by Jinx Well I'm back and on a mission. We are currently in the Water cave, then from which we will be headed to the tower in the desert to talk to Timat for a while. Good news though, we have transformed the characters into their alternate classes. We will beat this game hopefully tonight, and if not then, by tomorrow. 1-28-03 by RyThom I'm working a double shift on the marathon today as Jinx has evacuated and headed off to a frat function, no doubt eating excellent BBQed chicken and indulging in malt liquor. Ah well, the sacrifices one makes for the title of Final Fantasy Master. Anyways, today's session has been a productive one as we've gotten the first orb of four to shine. Lich was a piece of cake thanks to Lee finally not sucking. Who's Lee you ask? Ah, that's right. I haven't introduced you to the party yet... Bors: Fighter Lee: Black Belt Jed: White Mage Toth: Black Mage Names look familiar to anyone? If they do, you too must've read the Nintendo Power strat guide cover to cover for the majority of your adolescence. But yeah, Lee just got strong enough to shed his nun chucks and start going hand-to-hand. Occasionally he does more damage than Bors, even with his nice new Ice Sword. Ah, to see our children growing up... 1-27-03 by RyThom Jinx is hard at work plugging away at Chapter 3 of Final Fantasy 1 right behind me whilst I work on the site update. Some of you really hardcore FF fans might be saying to yourself, "Wait...there weren't any chapters in FF1". Well, alright. Officially, there weren't, but in the famous Nintendo Power Final Fantasy strategy guide, there were. As Jinx was saying before, we both definitely wasted our childhoods playing this game and reading said strategy guide. Its quite frightening how we'll go in an area and be able to instantly recall everything about it, despite being away from the game for more than a decade. Right now we're scrapping about in the Earth Cave and I don't think a single treasure box has been a mystery yet. Yeah, we're good. 1-27-03 by Jinx Well we started the fateful journey yesterday night, starting with Final Fantasy 1 on the NES system. Is scary how much RyThom and myself know about this ancient game. We both played it when we were young, and well, hate to say it, but it was the product of a wasted childhood. Anyways, we finally got totally wiped out in the Marsh Cave today. Disgusted, I put the game down. Its one thing to lose because your levels are too low, but its a total pisser when you die because of stupid-assed NPC abilities like paralyze, and the stun your whole group. Anyways, at what price beauty. Right now RyThom is going back to the boat we left near the elf town. I give this game 5 days, and we will have it completed, from there, we will journey to FF2 if we can find a copy. I don't fancy playing that on a rom state. Well, back to the game. |
