History

If you are interested in learning about the university's success in athletics the place to go is Butts-Mehere Heritage Hall. This is where they keep all of the trophies and information about the records that have been set by the athletes. You may also run into Mark Richt or Vince Dooley also. This is where their offices are located. The track and field events are held behind this building so you may also see some of the athletes practicing which you can watch from the front of the building because, they will not allow anyone on the track during practice.

The 430,000 sq. ft. Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities is a state-of-the-art recreational facility for UGA students, faculty and staff. The facility annually receives over 1.2 million visits from students.

The Rec Sports Complex is the University of Georgia's version of Central Park. The complex provides grounds for playing fields, fitness trails, picnic areas, tennis courts, running paths, beach and lake activities and much more. Six of the tennis courts are currently lighted and plans are underway to light the entire complex.

Stegeman Coliseum is home of to the UGA men's and women's basketball teams and the second most popular sport on campus, women's gymnastics. This mult-purpose building also host a wide-range of events from rodeos to concerts to commencement. In 1996, the coliseum was the site of the 1996 Olympic Volleyball and Rythimic Gymnastics Competitions.

Football is a central and very important part of many student's college experience when they attend the University of Georgia. Sanford Stadium has been around for over 70 years. Built in 1929, it was named after Dr. Steadman Vincent Sanford, a former University president. It initally held a capacity of 30,000 and cost a mere $360,000 to build. Each decade, thousands of seats were added until 1967 when the popularity and talent of the team had grown so much that an additional 19,640 seats were added in a double deck to the stadium. This project, this time costing nearly $3,000,000 brought capacity of Sanford Stadium to 59,000. In 2000, 20 SkySuites were added to an already existing 30, and a SkyClub was constructed on the southside upper deck directly under the SkySuites. This project cost the University nearly $12 million and brought the capacity up to an astonishing 86,520.

Sanford Stadium was also used as a venue during the 1996 Olympics. To prepare for the soccer portion of the games, the hedges had to be removed because soccer requires a wider field than football. Vince Dooley was quoted saying,"the hedges were 67 years old, and root systems were so thick they were getting into the main drain system." When the hedges were replaced after the Olympics, the workers took cuttings from the original hedges. Even better, the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games paid for both the removal and replacement of the hedges.
