Safety Links for Kids

1.        Texas Department of Transportation-Safety http://www.dot.state.tx.us/kidsonly/SafetyPg/Safety.html    The presentation of this site really grabs your attention.  It is user-friendly with a kid's site that student's could go to and get safety information.  The site did not say when it was last updated but since it was the DOT, I feel that it is accurate information.  The site loaded fast and was clearly marked so there was no confusion in the navigation of the site.  I would give this site an excellent rating.

2.        National Safe Kids Campaign http://www.safekids.org/   This site has great research articles on all types of safety.  The website is updated weekly because they have recent news articles on the front page that have to do with safety.  The research information is very thorough and accurate.  They have great links to areas about learning safety laws, receiving safety tips through the email, and a whole list of resources that one could use.  The website is clear on what they stand for and the links are easy to identify, with a link back to the home page.  The site has nice graphics but not distracting from their message.  This site and GM has won an award from the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board).  I would give this site an excellent rating.

3.        Farm Safety for Children  http://www.farmsafety.com/#Farm   This site is made by Safety 1st, who are manufactures of safety products for children.  They make everything from door latches to safety harnesses for the car.  The website is designed to show you the program they have designed to teach farm safety to younger children.  They have graphics showing each chapter outline with a brief description of what it entails.  They are very accessible because they have listed their address and have an email link for more information.  The information will be very useful for my unit on safety and I think that the students will be able to generalize to the real world because some of them live on farms.  The page is set up nice and is appealing to the eye.  The page loads quickly.  They do not have it posted when the website is updated but it is more of a general information page for you to contact them for more information.  The do have links that will take you to a specific area and then takes you back to the top of the page.  I feel that this is a good site for information.

4.        Fireman Jim's Fire Safety for Kids  http://www.firemanjim.com/index.html  This website has a link for children to meet Fireman Jim, tips for fire safety, a newsletter, and even a kids club.  It could be used as reinforcement to a lesson on fire safety.  The page has pictures as links for children who do not read and links with titles and brief descriptions.  The page is very colorful and in good taste.  The page can be navigated quite easily and does not have an excess of information.  The video that you can order has received the TELLY award for 1999 and is endorsed by the coalition for quality children videos.  I would give this site a good rating.

5.        Foodbourne Illness Education Information Center USDA http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodborne/fbindex/016.htm  This page is nothing but links on food safety for children.  Most of the links are for children, which has games and things for them to play that teaches food safety.  The other links have to do with information in the news about food safety and outbreaks that have occurred recently.  The website is brought to us by the USDA so it is updated regularly.  The way the page is set up it can broke down into sections that interest you which I feel is a plus since it can cut down on surfing time.  I feel that the information on the web pages can be useful in the planning of my unit and thorough.  The background makes the site easy to read and there is a link back to the homepage on the supporting pages.  One could spend a lot of time on this site exploring all the links.  There are cute little graphics that move across the supporting pages that catch your eye.  Information can be printed off without having to change your computer setting or downloading a reader.  I give this website an excellent rating.
