Recommended Pigeon Reading
by
Frank Mosca

Some have complained that the books listed here are older ones. I've done that purposely to make it easier for new fanciers to be able to find materials in their local libraries instead of having to hunt down some specialized service. I've also tried to hold this list to those of genetics interest, plus a few basic books. If you're interested in newer works, you can always check the pigeon supply companies I've listed below. I'm also listing a few periodicals from the U.S.

Purebred Pigeon Magazine   A new U.S. all breed pigeon magazine

Racing Pigeon Digest   One of the best racing pigeon magazines in N. America

    Gibson., L.P., GENETICS OF PIGEONS
(A photocopied book, but the most up to date and comprehensive accounting of what we presently known of pigeon genetics.) Paul's also editor of Pigeon Genetics, News Views and Comments - an informal quarterly regarding the work presently being done. (417 S. Chillicothe St., Plain City OH 43064).

Hollander, W. F., ORIGINS AND EXCURSIONS IN PIGEON GENETICS
(Doc. Hollander was the man who's taught all of us genetics, and the one who forced us to think.. This is an informal history of the discovery of the various mutations and alleles of the common  pigeon.) By the way, I miss Doc and his letters.   The man was insightful, had a weird sense of humor, and knew more about genetics and pigeon genetics than I ever will to my dying day.

Willard F. Hollander, Ph.D.

    Levi, Wendell, THE PIGEON
(THE pigeon classic. A bit dated in spots now, but still the most monumental work of the last century. Thousands of illustrations and more than 700 pages.)

Levi, Wendell, THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIGEON BREEDS
(Hundreds of color photos of pigeon, including many rare breeds. A beautiful book; also a great book to use to see the various effects of different genetic combinations.)

Liggett, Thomas, PIGEON, FLY HOME! (young adult novel)

[Out of print, but well worth reading if you can find it in the library. There's quite a bit of information on racing pigeons which is presented in an entertaining manner. Beside, it's my favorite pigeon book of all time. It's the one that made me want race birds as a boy. (Here is biographical info on Mr. Liggett as well. Thomas Liggett.]

Müller, Erich & Ludwig Schrag, FANCY PIGEONS

(Many pictures of various breeds; also some pictures of ill pigeons to help in diagnosis - some information, especially brand names of medication, is geared to European breeders. English translation is good, though occasionally stilted; English usage of breeder terminology is sometimes unclear. All in all though, a worthwhile book to check out.)

    Naether, Carl, PIGEONS

A basic beginner's book on the care of pigeons as pets. Available in most pet and feed stores for about $10 U.S.

Quinn, Joe, THE PIGEON BREEDER'S NOTEBOOK: An Introduction to Pigeon Science

(A pigeon genetics book. Not always easy to follow if you don't have a science background, but definitely worth the effort - you'll get it if you try.)

    Schütte, Joachim, et al.,

HANDBUCH DER TAUBENRASSEN: DIE TAUBENRASSEN DER  WELT.

(Handbook of Pigeon Breeds: The Pigeon Breeds of the World)

In German (auf Deutsch) - an absolutely beautiful book with hundreds of photos of breeds from around the world. Worth looking at for that alone. If you read German, it's also a great reference work.

Sell., Axel, BREEDING AND INHERITANCE IN PIGEONS

(The most beautiful of all the genetics works presently in print. Color photos showing the mutations discussed are a great help.)

Sell, Axel, TAUBEN: ZÜCHTEN MIT SYSTEM

(mostly text; in German, but an excellent source of information for those who read the language.)

    Vriend, Matthew M., PIGEONS

Another fairly basic beginner's book on pigeon care. Well written and informative.

Whitney, Leon, PIGEON CITY (Y.A. Novel)

NOW BACK IN PRINT.  You can find it, at least, at JEDDS

Worth reading since it's a classic. The story of three boys and their racing homers.]

SOME U.S. PIGEON SUPPLY COMPANIES

There are many other excellent pigeon books on the market - and some lousy ones. Many of these books are devoted to specific breeds, especially Birmingham Rollers and Racing Homers. Most can be purchased from the various supply houses which are listed below. I'm sorry, I don't know any suppliers outside the U.S., so you'll have to check with your local booksellers or pigeon supply companies.  I have linked the company name to their website and also provided phone information where available. The pigeon books link takes you to Silvio Mattacchione & Co. in Canada.
