Macon City Council
Revisits Young Adult Ban
February 26th, 2001
On Monday, February 26th, the Public Safety Committee of the Macon City Council held another hearing on the Young Adult Ban. The meeting was scheduled at 4:00 pm in the afternoon to discourage participation of business owners and college students. Many bar owner, LP activists and college students still managed to take time out of their day to attend the meeting.
Libertarians David Corr (BCLP Chair) and Ashli Axtell spoke against the revised ordinance. Several bar owners and other concerned citizens also spoke out against the Young Adult Ban. After listening to the citizen's objections, the Public Safety Committee voted down the ordinance 3 to 2.
Filomena Mullis still has the right to put the proposal in front of entire City Council so we must continue watching the City Council agendas for the Young Adult Ban.
You can read the Macon Telegraph's coverage of the meeting here.
Macon City Council on
Crime Wave
January 16, 2001
On Tuesday, January 16, the Macon City Council allowed business leaders and concerned citizens to address them about the recent crime wave. Several Libertarians were present, and David Corr addressed the Council. He presented the council with several recommendations:
1) The City Council should make this crime wave its highest priority.
2) Off-duty Macon police officers should be allowed to serve as security in establishments which serve alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises. Currently, they are not allowed to do so.
3) He suggested that it is time to look at our current gun laws, especially the Georgia concealed carry laws. Current law would not allow someone to carry a concealed weapon into places like Rio Bravo or Jim Shaws.
No stranger to presenting politically incorrect views to the Macon City Council, Corr's remarks were met the general quiet indifference they provide him. However, the crowd in the chamber reacted very positively to Corr's comments.
Macon Telegraph coverage of the City Council Meeting can be found here.
Great press in the Telegraph this morning. Front & center with big color picture. Good quotes from Jim Baldwin and David Corr. The party was mentioned favorably.
Jim Baldwin had a front page photograph and caption which is not on the internet version of the Telegraph. This caption reads "James Baldwin speaks out against the proposed ordinance at Monday night's hearing. Baldwin called the ordinance 'a rape of our freedom.'
Fox24 and WMAZ-13 both covered the story, but focused on the father-son thing which occurred. It provided an interesting story, but did little to inform the public about reasons to not enact this ordinance. The coverage was not balanced, in my opinion, and no member of the press is challenging the distorted statistics presented last night.
We got the message out! Now we have to wait and see what the Safety Committee does. One new avenue of resolution was opened which Libertarians will have no problem. A possible outcome of this is that bar owners will once again have the ability to hire moonlighting police officers as security officers. Imagine that, a free-market solution to combat an oppressive ordinance.
Good job everybody, and thanks for all of your hard work.
In addition to our success with Harry, substantial coattails followed him.
Michael Quinn Named Volunteer of the Week!

Michael Quinn, webmaster of the Middle Georgia Friends of Harry Browne was recognized by the national campaign office as the volunteer of the week.
Mercer Cluster
Week of Nov 6
The Mercer Cluster printed a GREAT front page piece about the Harry Browne event. This was in their special election edition. Also, there were 3 or 4 other appropriate places to list Libertarian party stuff, they got them all. Great press, great coverage, ton's of quotes from Michael Quinn, Bryan Gordon, as well as lesser knowns like Paul MacGregor and Harry Browne. I
Hitting both the official and the underground Mercer papers so well during an election season is awesome. Not only do we influence votes for this election, but we also influence minds for the future.
Saxby Chambliss/Charlton Heston NRA Rally
Nov 3
We had some success with this event. We missed each other at the entrance, but several of us met inside. There were several people from the Middle Georgia Friends of Harry Browne. Deborah Mooney, Amy Fleeman, Dave Whitaker, Brian Thomson, and I were there.
Ed Knight was on the opposite side of the room trying to recruit new
Libertarians. There was no opportunity to ask questions of Saxby or Charlton Heston.
After the event Brian, Dave & I did a wave and smile in front of the Warner Robins Civic Center. A reporter from the Macon Telegraph noticed us on the way out and interviewed us. He was surprised to hear that we thought the NRA was soft on gun rights. Both Dave & I explained that we are current NRA members considering resigning because they compromise too much on gun rights. Brian mentioned that he is a former NRA member for the same reason. Surprisingly he asked us our opinion on the Bush DUI story.
Thanks to everyone that attended.
We were quoted in an article in the Macon Telegraph about the Bush DUI conviction.

Oct 24
The unofficial paper at Mercer, "The Fuse", finally printed their set of articles about the LP and HB.
They printed an article entitled "Libertarian Party Moving Fast in Georgia" written by our own Bryan Gordon.Brandi Brown, the editor of the paper wrote a reasonably accurate article entitled "Harry Browne: The Libertarian Choice". There were quotes from her interview with Brian Thomson.
They also printed a four paragraph piece in their Opinions and Commentary section which Bryan Gordon wrote in criticism of Mercer University and the Fuse for omission of Libertarian material in a lot of venues.
Congratulations are due to Bryan Gordon and Brian Thomson.

Jim Baldwin's Letter about Medical Marijuana Published
Oct 25
Jim Baldwin who has worked tirelessly on the Harry Browne campaign in Macon is HIV positive. He wrote a courageous letter about how marihuana has helped him stay healthy through the years. The war on drugs is a war on good people like Jim.
Unfortunately the letter was published late, as it mentioned that Harry Browne was soon to visit Macon.

Sept 28th
Bryan Gordon gave a presentations on libertarianism and Harry Browne to two Political Science classes at Mercer University.
Bryan added another 29 to the Harry Browne Rally list. Some of the students asked some tough questions.Mercer Student Presentation
Sept 27th
Brian Thomson gave a quick introductory lesson on libertarianism to two classes at Mercer. It seemed to go over well, especially in the second class. The students asked a few questions, mainly about the war on drugs and where would the money come from if we ended the income tax. For the war on drugs, Brian explained how the murder rate peaks are double what the murder rate was before the war on drugs. Also, many more teenagers are using drugs now than before the drug war started. He mentioned that there are over 2 million people in jail in this country. "We lead the world in our incarceration rate. Several hundred thousand of these people have never hurt anyone. They are there because they were in possession of drugs. We don't jail alcoholics, and Libertarians don't think that we should jail drug users either".
24 students put their names down to attend the Harry Browne event. This gives us over 100 names. Special thanks to Brian Thomson, Steve and Bryan Gordon for working up the event.
Harry Browne Rally Posters
Sept
Steve and Bryan Gordon worked hard to create and distribute posters on the Mercer campus advertising the Harry Browne rally . Each poster included tear away contact information. Thanks for all the hard work Steve and Bryan.
Macon Labor Day Road Race
We ran a table at the Labor Day Road Race. We had an excellent response. We gave out about 200 brochures, 60 or 70 tabloids, and several bumper stickers. We quit using the world's smallest political quiz fairly early on. Most of the runners were to tired to think about anything. We used the line "Have you heard of Harry Browne - The Libertarian Candidate for President?" If the person took the brochure we would say "he wants to end the income tax." "Thanks for stopping by." Most of the people who had heard of him mentioned something about Neal Boortz. Thanks to Michael Quinn, David Corr, and Brian Thomson for working the table.
Income Tax Day Rally
We have had some great successes so far in the local Harry Browne campaign. First of all, the Tax day rally was a blast! 100s of people gave us thumbs up, and honked their horns as a small token of support. We made the news on three local stations. Our no Income Tax signs and Harry Browne banners were clearly visible. You could even read the 1-800 number. I was interviewed on two of the stations, my first interviews ever. Several thousand people now know that Harry Browne and the Libertarian Party stand for eliminating the income tax. Please thank Lee Paquet, Tim Barber, Mahlon Marr, Ronnie and Marge Thomson, and Paula Thomson for making the event a success the next time that you see them.
Houston County Youth Fair Booth
The booth at the fair went well, though the traffic was slow at times. We gave the World's Smallest Political Quiz to almost 300 people. Over 20% of the people scored libertarian. 25 of the libertarians left their names for more information. We were able to give out at least 100 tabloids to people who stopped by the booth. I would thank Lee Paquet, Tim Barber, Mahlon Marr, Michael Quinn, and Ronnie and Marge Thomson for manning the booth. Lee Paquet went above and beyond the call of duty. Also, I would like to thank Gary Maddox for entering the names into his computer.
Letters Published
On May 24th, Brian Thomson 's letter to the editor was published in the Macon Telegraph. He borrowed much of the letter from Harrys article about the Million Mom March, and the repeal gun laws. Brian was able to fit both "Harry Browne" and the word "Libertarian" into the letter twice. The editors even printed the web site address, and the 1-800 number. It is very important that we build name recognition for Harry and the Libertarian Party. The more times that people see Harrys name the easier it will be to get them to listen to his ideas.
Campaign Signs
We placed 33 Harry Browne yard signs around Warner Robins on July 2.
WMAC AM 940 Interview
On July 26, Brian Thomson was interviewed on the Kenny Bergamy show on WMAC 940 radio about the Harry Browne and the campaign.
Eastman Gun Show
The booth at the Eastman Gun Show a great success. Over the August 5th weekend several volunteers gave the World's Smallest Political Quiz to almost 380 people. Over 30% of the people scored libertarian. Fifty-Five of the libertarians left their names for more information. We gave out at least 200 campaign tabloids, and brochures to people who stopped by the booth.
Thanks to Heidi Hulsey, Lee Paquet, Mahlon Marr, David and Judy Corr, Ronnie and Marge Thomson, Michael Quinn, and Brian Thomson for manning the booth. Extra thanks go to Heidi Hulsey for entering the collected names into a computer.
Awards
Our very own Brian Thomson was recognized by the Harry Browne campaign as volunteer of the week for June 3 - 9, 2000
