Helen's Grave

Bromley Cemetery - Christchurch

I couldn't believe it when I finally found what had happened to Helen ROBINSON, the girl who had married Tom FORD in 1886, then moved to Mokau near her brother, Daniel ROBINSON. Tom had died early on, leaving Helen with three children to raise. She disappeared for a while, until I found some letters written to her... in Christchurch. I searched the newspapers for a death notice, and found one stating that "the funeral will then leave for Bromley Cemetery" - bingo! A kind person at the Christchurch City Council supplied me with a map, and I set off for the cemetery.

The grave is very close to the entrance on the corner of Linwood Ave and Keighleys Road. Just park next to the line of gum trees about halfway down that first block on the left, and the grave is about 15 rows back near one end. It is a single grave, concreted over, with a small marble plaque at the foot. The plaque reads: "Helen FORD - 1862-1934".
