Samuel COULTER and David BUCHANAN

Samuel COULTER and his son-in-law David BUCHANAN arrived in New Zealand with their families, per the Taranaki on 24 January 1879 - just one month prior to the Kaitangata Mine Disaster. Samuel was 50 years old at the time of his death. His youngest son, Samuel was born just six weeks later, on the first of April 1879. Not much of an April Fools joke.

Samuel's three eldest children had immigrated to New Zealand in 1875, on board the Invercargill - William, his wife Ann Mackie and son Samuel and William's sisters Margaret and Jane.
