Saint Augustine was one of
the most influential thinkers in western civilization. He was born
in 354 A.D. in the Roman province of Numidia in North Africa (now known as
Souk Ahras in Algeria). In 391 he became Bishop of Hippo, a post he
retained until his death in A.D. 43. Since that time people have relied on
his writings as an authority when discussing theological matters.
