"The following published in Belfast Times 1858? by R. M. Sibert, History of Ireland-Caldwell's became a prominent family in 1349. William Cauldwell, Prebendary of Glasgow, was Lord Chancellor of Scotland. His descendant, William Caldwell of Straeton, Ayrshire had sons Joseph, David and John who appeared early in the parish of Ennis Killen, Fermaugh. He married MARGARET PHILLIPS 04 January 1704 in County Derry, IRE, daughter of Griffith Phillips and Janet McCullough. Notes This couple is buried at Cub Creek Presbyterian Church in Charlotte Co., VA. Cub Creek may have earlier been in Lunenberg Co., VA. Capt. John Caldwell, I arrived in America at Newcastle, DE on 10 Dec 1727; the ship was possibly the "Eaglewing". From there he migrated to Chestnut Level, Lancaster Co., PA. He was an Elder in the church of Rev. John Thompson. Capt. John moved settled later (1742) in Cub Creek (also called "Caldwell's Settlement') in Lunenburg Co., VA (now Charlotte). From World Family Tree Project Record: " Emigrated in 1727. Lived in Drumore township, Chestnut Level, Lancaster Co., PA. Elder in church of Rev. John Thompson. Very active in church affairs in the "back parts" of VA (Wilson's Tinkling Spring, p. 41-45). In 1742 settled Cub Creek (also known as "Caldwell's Settlement") in Lunenberg Co., VA (now Charlotte). His friend, Rev. John Thompson, settled in Buffalo Community in 1744 in Amelia Co., VA (now Prince Edward), adjacent to Lunenberg. Will, 26 Nov 1748, Lunenberg Co., VA WB 1:498. Transcribed copy I have does not mention Thomas. However, letter from Lillian O. Forster (see Thomas notes) says original did mention Thomas...between David and Robert as getting 500 acres on east side of Cub Creek. From Thomas Stallworth, 102 Sunset Drive, P.O. Box 766, Chester, SC 29706; Entered port of New Castle, DE, 10 Dec 1727. Records show that John and Margaret brought their five oldest children, William with wife Rebecca, Thomas with wife Mary Jane, David perhaps with wife Mary, Margaret with husband James, and John to America with them. He married HANNAH OGDEN 14 March 1763 in Newark, NJ, daughter of John Ogden and Hannah Sayre. Notes This couple is buried at the Presbyterian Church at Elizabethtown, NJ. James Caldwell graduated from Yale University in 1759; he was ordained minister in 1762 by the Presbyterians. He was killed by an American traitor named Morgan at Elizabethtown, NJ. N. J. Morgan was reputed to have been paid by the British for this assasination. Rev. James Caldwell was said to have conducted services with a loaded pistol on each side of his Bible. He married ELIZABETH ANN WILLIAMS, daughter of John Williams and Mary Atwood. Notes William Thomas Caldwell is buried at Rosemont Cemetery, Newberry, SC. He moved to SC with his mother and lived 2 years with brother in law Patrick Calhoun in Abbeville Dist., SC. He joined his brother John Caldwell in Newberry Dist., SC and became surveyor; joined John's company of Rangers in the Revolution; promoted to Lt.; captured and held prisoner at St. Augustine, FL; he escaped and served more, finally joining a company of militia commanded by his brother James Caldwell; he was in the battle of Cowpens. He inherited his brother John's estate; married and settled on Mill Creek. He and Joseph Wright were appointed in 1787 by the county court to run traverse lines of the district to determine central point for the courthouse. In 1789 he was a county judge. With Col. Waters, he laid off two acres now constituting the public square in Newberry. In 1804 he was elected Senator for Newberry. It was said of him, "Rode good horses as long as he lived, and rode well." Notes James Caldwell, Sr. came to SC with widowed mother about 1770; bore no active part in the Revolution until 1780, after which he commanded a company of militia. On 17 Jan 1781, as company commander under Gen. Pickens, he was severely wounded by Tarleton's Dragoons at Cowpens; was incapacitated for further service. After the war, he abducted the notorious Tory Matthew Love from the courtroom at Ninety Six, SC and helped to hang him. He served one term in the House of Representatives and resigned. He married FLORIDE COLHOUN 08 January 1811, daughter of John Colhoun. Notes John graduated Yale University 1802-1804-Law School at Litchfield, CT in 1805. He was admitted to the bar in 1807; elected to the House of Representatives from SC in 1807; 1808 appointed to staff of Gov. Drayton; elected to Congress 1810, 1812, 1814, 1816; in 1817 he was selected Secretary of War by President Monroe until 1825; he was Vice President of the United States, resigning from that office in 1832; he was elected Senator from SC and re-elected 1834 and 1840, resigning in 1842-43. In 1844, he was a candidate for US president, but withdrew and was appointed Secretary of State by President Tyler; served one year and again elected to Senate. He died in Washington, DC at age 86.
