Time to dust off this 1960 Stanley Kramer classic depicting the monumental courtroom battle that took place during the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. Spencer Tracy is next to the top of my lengthy A-list (favorite American actors of all time) - just behind Gregory Peck. And along with "Bad Day at Black Rock" this film is my favorite Tracy vehicle due to the power of its script.
Cast Away
There was Crusoe and Friday. Now there's Noland...and Wilson.Trying to find music to this film is like trying to find the score to "The Blair Witch Project". There were a couple of Elvis tunes and at least a reference to the Door's "Light My Fire", but how appropriate would they be as representative of this film? Not very. Silvestri's score is necessarily quite nearly non-existent. So I broke with my regular format, just this once (no MIDI but an aif-file instead), for a film I greatly admire. In my humble opinion you can throw the many "beginning" and "end" criticisms of "Cast Away" to the wind. The beginning was essential set-up and accomplished its purpose in an extremely limited time frame. The last act was both heart wrenching and, finally, hopeful. Both end-pieces provided perspective and contrast to lend power to the central drama that was to be a tour-de-force for one Tom Hanks...an incredible performance.

Saltwater Moose
Every now and then I'll be including some family oriented live-action titles on this site, and I'll bring your attention to them. Cartoons are alright, but if life's lessons are are to be introduced to the young as an entertainment, I believe it best to show them at work with "real" people. This film is an award winner for children's programming and includes one of my favorite traditional Scottish tunes. I hope it may give you an idea of something to watch WITH your little ones.
You Can Count On Me
I haven't seen this film yet, but it is highest on my rental list. From the short clip I saw of Laura Linney's performance on the Academy Awards show (she was up for "best actress"), I'm reminded of a young Meryl Streep - without, perhaps, all of the technical skills in Ms. Streep's repertoire but with a naturalness and ease in front of the camera that makes her appear vulnerable and definitely a joy to watch.
The Witches of Eastwick
Going back to 1987 for this somewhat uneven film which is saved by a stellar cast...and, most especially, by one of my favorite risk-taking actors - the wickedly hilarious Jack Nicholson.
