Dear Yetive:

Received your letter while on a trip to Tennessee searching out McCracken materials.  Was delighted to have the names of Robert's children but would like to have the dates of their births and the names of the persons each married.

I had thought that the Robert of Rhea County, 1830 census may have been the son of John with Margaret named in John's will of 1820.  Do you know if Robert and wife (either Nancy or Mary) went directly to Arkansas from Rhea county or did they perhaps return to Washington county between 1830 and 1840 sometime.  I have more McCracken marriages than I can fit into the families, perhaps some married twice or maybe some of Robert's children married there.

There are many descendants of Henry's children living in Jonesboro, Tennessee.  Also there are some of another group from Virginia, so again it becomes a sorting procedure.

I also went to Rhea county while in Tennessee and did not find Robert as owning land, but found where John and Nancy Henry McCracken sold land which Nancy had inherited from her father John Henry, Sr.  This was July 6, 1833.

I have much material on the McCracken's and lots on John and Margaret in Washington County.  I had thought perhaps they came from either Chester (now Adams) or York County, Pa.  All six of their children were born in Pennsylvania and I have visited the cemtereys in Washington and Green county, and have many of the tombstone inscriptions.  John's will was probated Jan 8, 1820.  Since all children were born in Pa, I assume they were married there about 1774 as John, jr was born December, 1775.  I abstracted wills and deeds in Jonesboro and will be happy to exchange information with you on a continuing basis.  Could you send me the census information which you have from Arkansas on all the children that went there.  I feel John and Samuel and perhaps Robert married in Virginia as they came down to Tennessee.

The McCracken's intermarried with the Adams -- Mary McCracken Patton Adams Hamilton.  She had 5 Patton children and 6 Adams.  One of the Adam girls married a Chester and they all came to Tennessee.  They came from Chester County, Pa.

Henry McCracken was a preacher and so was a John in 1815.  Samuel gave land for a Methodist Episcopal Church in 1828, so perhaps they were all Methodist.

The old John/Margaret had a large estate which he divided among his children.  John McClure and George Ewing are both shown on the Kings Mountain Soldier list of 1782.  Is this your line??

I have the 1790 census for the United States and also some of the Pennsylvania marriages, but have been unable to locate the right county.  However the Archives in Atlanta does not have too many books from Pa.  Guess I will have to make a trip there later in the summer if I don't have any luck in locating them.

The tax list in Washington County 1814 shows:

Henry McCracken

John McCracken, Jr.

James McCracken

John McCracken

Samuel McCracken

Tax list of 1819 shows:

John (not Joseph) 1 WP, 138 acres

Samuel

Henry

John

Robert

Was Robert's name James Robert by any chance or do you know?  I had thought perhaps they were one and the same.

Were all the children's names you sent McCracken's or were some Henderson.  I have Robert/Elizabeth, Ewing/Emeline J, and John/Mary B from the 1860 census in Madison county.  Please send me what you have on Robert's family and I will try to fill in the gaps and in the meantime will sort through the information I have and will send more in the next letter.

Hoping to hear real soon,

Sincerely yours,

Bonnye T. Leary

Dear Bonnye:

So glad we are working on the same line.

I worked out my own way of keeping records before I began buying "Family Records" and I still like my way.  Feel free to make any changes and add on back.  So glad you've been able to research in Tenn. Thought I would be able to do this after retiring from teaching but I haven't  been able to get my heart-beat to slow to normal so I rest and work geneology by mail.

Hope this reaches you about the time your daughter leaves.  I expect my son the last of August.

I don't know that Robt. (1783-1855) was James Robert McCracken.

Dear Bonnye:

Sorry, I misplaced your letter.  You are so much farther back than I've gone, you puzzle me.  I've been stopped with Robt. McCracken for years and you really give me a thrill. I'm sending some blank sheets which you may use and return to me if its easier for you.

I can't tell you where all my information came from but I'll try.

In Madison Co. (Ark.) Genealogist, June 1969, p.68-69, is a list of Early Land Claims - - - Northeastern Madison Co. and the other page is a map with numbers showing where each man had land.  The 1968 - 69 issues are bound otgether but I'll try to tak apart & put through xerox machine for you next week.  It is continued in other issues, too.  I'be been back to Ark. as you went to Tenn. and talked with kin, etc.  So many of the families married back and forth, I think you'll need all the lists and maps.

Is Geo. Ewing a brother to Rebecca (Ewing) McClure?

According to "The McClure Clan - Genealogy of the S.W. Mo. Branch" compiled by Mabel B. McClure, John McClure and wife, Rebecca Ewing imigrated to America in 1790, with 3 sons:  James "Jim", Wm. "Billie", and Robt. "Bob".  Their son John Ewing was b. 1790, 3 mo. after they arrived.  He d. 1835.  Nancy b. Lynchburg, VA 1792 m. Robt. McCracken

Mary "Polly" McClure was the youngest.  Maybe this book isn't authentic.  So many have mistakes.

Goodspeed's N.W. Ark. History, 1889 said Robt. moved with his parents to Jonesboro, Tenn. and then to Rhea Co., Tenn.  He was of Scotch-Irish descent.  He was a farmer, a soldier in the War of 1812 and was on his way to the Battle of New Orleans while it was being fought.  He m. Nancy McClure, also of Scotch-Irish descent, who was b. in Va. and d. in Madison Co., Ark. 1839.  They were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  To their marriage was born "nine children."  In 1889, 5 were living.  (I've found 11 children - maybe Minerva doesn't belong - maybe this is a mistake in Goodspeed).

In a book in Clayton Library, Houston, Texas - can't find name -

6 Jan 1773 - on ship Lord Dunlace, from Ireland James McClure

1767 - John McClure, Jane McClure, Wm. McClure

Sept. 1767 on ship Britannia, John Bryan, Commander

Christian McClure age 40

Jannet McClure age 12

John McClure age 7

Samuel McClure age 4

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Robert was a private in Capt. Jonathan Waddles Co., Regiment Commanded by Col. Samuel Baylis.  Robt. was drafted at Jonesboro, Tenn. for 6 months - 1 Nov 1814 and discharged at Jonesboro the last day of April 1815.  He appeared 5 Nov 1850, Co. of Madison, Ark. to apply for bounty land.  At this time he was age 66.  Justice of Peace was Ebenezer Brown.
Bounty Land Claim - 9 May 1855 - He was 73
Land Warrant, #16056 for 80 acres, he disposed of at earlier date.
25 July 1857, Nancy, age 65, she was asking for land warrant #25777 which he applied for 9 May 1855 and it was granted 11 Mar 1856, after his death.  She signed with her mark X.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please feel free to tell me where your records differ from mine.  That way we will know where to hunt farther.

Think the Federal Constitution was adopted in Philadelphia Dec. 1787 so Robt. was b. Pa. before it was a state.

I have notes and records from many people on McClure and McCracken.  If you send me records, I'll try to help you, too.

Hope you can tell me Robert's parents, brothers, sisters and other ancestors, if you've found them.

As you know it has taken me hours to fix this for you.  Copy what you wish, add to or suggest changes and return to me.  I'll do the same with notes you send to me.

Is Henry a bro to Robert who m. Nancy McClure?

Were John & Margaret (  ) McCracken parents of Robt.?

Thanks for any all helps you can send to me.

Sincerely,

Yetive Ramsey

P.S. I'll hunt more census records next time.

Dear Yetive:

Sorry for the delay in answering, but with my daughter and family here, I found I just didn't have time to do any family work.  Her husband in the air force and they get a month off each year.  She has two children 4 and 2 years old.

I quit working last December when we moved from Atlanta to the lake permanently.  My husband travels for Armco Steel Corporation.  I used to teach school in Oklahoma before we moved to the southern states.  Then I worked at Emory University in the administration office for 12 years.  Now, just family hunting.

My correspondence
