Brookwood Earns Runner-up Spot at Lake Forest Six members of the Brookwood Academic Team (BAT) flew to Chicago with Mr. Barry, Mrs. Case, and Ms. Neace on May 24 to compete in the 15th Annual Tournament of Champions at Lake Forest College. We were able to win all three of our preliminary matches including an opening match with perennial power Edmond Memorial from Oklahoma. Earning the #6 seed entering the single elimination playoffs, we were able to stumble past Copley (Ohio) in the Round of 32 in what Mr. Barry called "one of the worst performances by a BAT in national competition ever!" After spending the last night of the tournament away from Lake Forest in a motel, we came back strong on Tuesday sweeping past Edmond Memorial (OK) again in the Round of 16; pummeling Irmo (SC) in the quarterfinals, and solidly defeating Cookeville (TN) in the semifinals. Playing Northside (AR) in the championship game, the BAT came up short 300-325. This was the third time that a Mr. Barry-coached Brookwood team finished second at Lake Forest as this year's team joined the 1994 and 1998 teams in finishing second.
The BAT Claims Sixth Place at NAQT Nationals Mr. and Mrs. Barry took four members of the BAT to Detroit to compete at the 6th annual NAQT Nationals held at the University of Michigan. Brookwood's erratic play caused them to stumble to a 6-2 preliminary record. That record did include a 285-220 victory over tournament runner-up Detroit Country Day. ( We later lost to DCD in our last match in the playoffs.) Of the 40 teams that competed at NAQT, the BAT made it to the 12-team playoff grouping going 3-2 highlighted by another victory over Edmond Memorial (OK) and defending champions State College-A (PA) and earning a spot in the last playoff grouping of 6 teams. Losing to Riverdale (TN) and DCD left the BAT in a 6th place finish. Brookwood has now finished 3rd (1999 in Norman, OK), 7th (in Atlanta, GA), and 6th places in the three NAQT Nationals.
