By far one of the best Xena episodes yet. The creators pulled a neat trick by having the action take place in 1940's Macedonia and using a descendant of Xena - a ditzy daughter of a world famour scholar Melinda Pappas (played by Lucy Lawless) who eventually will become Xena. The storyline has Melinda traveling to Macedonia to hook up with archaeologist Janice Covington(played by Gabrielle herself Renee O'Connor) to find the legendary Xena Scrolls. They run into JacquesS'er who claims to be an officer in the Free French Army (played by TedRaimi as the descendant of Joxer) who is willing to help them. Our heroesmust contend with fortune hunter John Smythe and his cronies who will stopat nothing to retrieve the Xena Scrolls. Once these explorers team up to search the cave where the scrolls are said to be hidden, they find them and run into Ares, the war god who has been asleep for ages and demands that the descendant of Xena free him to start a new age of destruction. That's when Xena's spirit takes over Melinda's body and the battle begins. Of course Xena wins and entombs Ares once again. There is a slant toward humor in this episode and it really is funny. But thereare also memorable flashbacks of the main characters and a good battle between Xena and Ares. Like I said The Xena Scrolls is one of the best in the series.
