(enroute from South Carolina to Richmond, Va) 7/20/1862, A J Reese letter dated 7/21/1862 tells of the accident "I am sorry to say that we happen to have had a very unfortunate accident resulting in the death of one of the Polk Rifles. He was sitting in the door of one of the car boxes just before me. By some means (I did not see him as the post struck him) he was knocked out and killed. Green Lee Brooks - Not shown in service records BUT was listed in 1906 Roster Commission rolls with notation "Died in service", He was shown in the 1860 Polk county census in the household of Micajah Brooks and was the younger brother of Carter Brooks, He was 14 in 1860 so we thought it was probable that he joined Co D during the spring of either 1863 or 1864 and died before ever being recorded on a muster roll, This may not be correct however since an entry on ancestry.com shows him marrying Lucinda Cheek in Polk County in 1868, He then cannot be found in either the 1870 or 1880 census

John A Brooks - Enlisted 5/14/1862, Transferred to 3rd Ga Sharpshooter Battalion May 1863, WIA (severe) at Wilderness 5/6/1864, No further record, Widow applied for pension in Alabama noting that he died 8/25/1881, 1906 Roster Commission roll also notes a wound received at South Mountain, Md. 9/14/1862

James Brooks - Enlisted 5/14/1862, Shown as wounded on roll dated 10/5/1864, Admitted to Richmond hospital 6/2/1864 so wound occurred at Cold Harbor, (postwar pension application confirms that he was wounded in the arm at Cold Harbor and was at home on wounded furlough at the end of the war), Shown on all further rolls as "wounded furlough", Born in Henry county, Ga in 1834

Joseph M Gladden - Enlisted 6/14/1861, Age 19, 2nd Corporal on roll dated Dec 1864, Deserted 1/24/1865 at Bermuda Hundred, Sent to Philadelphia 1/25/1865 and sent north, He obviously lied about his age (19) when he enlisted in June of 1861. He was born in November of 1846 so would only have been 14 when he joined. He had a few early illnesses in 1861 and 1862, but otherwise was a reliable soldier and fought in all the Legion's major actions. He married a woman named Hannah in Illinois in 1869 and can be found living/farming in Mason County, Illinois in the 1880 census. By 1900 he had moved to Cass County, Illinois, It appears that he and his wife had at least three daughters and a son. By 1910 they had moved to Holt County, Mo. Not found anywhere in the 1920 census so it is likely that he died between 1910 and 1920.

Richard O Hargis - Enlisted 6/14/1861 ,Age 26, Disability discharge 5/22/1862

Jesse Harper - Enlisted 9/14/1861 in Virginia, Captured at Russellville, Tn 3/10/1864 and imprisoned at Rock Island 5/30/1864, Last on Rock Island roll 6/24/1864 with a notation indicating that he had taken the Oath and joined the US Navy, U S Navy records show that he enlisted 6/10/1864 at Chicago and served on the ships Potomac, W G Anderson, Sciota and was then assigned to the Trefoil but never reported for duty, His enlistment shows him to be 21 years old 5'9" tall with blue eyes and light hair, Listed as a deserter on postwar records until applying to the government in 1890 to have his desertion record removed, In his application he states that the Sciota was blown up on April 14th 1865 while he was detailed to the gig crew, that he then became seriously ill and when recovered served on the Trefoil until departing for home on July 5th 1865, At the time this was submitted Jesse was living at Corsicana in Navarre County Texas, The Navy agreed to remove the desertion charge from his record in March 1891 and provided him with a pension, Born in Morgan County Ga 7/23/1842 to Josiah and Samantha Harper, Died 8/12/1925 in Terrell Tx

They have been married since at least 1867 since they have a son William 12. Robert was a very reliable soldier and fought in all the Legion's actions.
