SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) -- Thieves broke into a Sydney pet shop and stole 20 giant bird-eating spiders and 20 scorpions, police said on Tuesday, warning residents to avoid the potentially lethal arachnids. The thieves also stole 150 hermit crabs during a break-in late on Monday. "The owner of the store regards these spiders as one of the most dangerous in the world as their venom has a rapid effect on the human central nervous system, causing victims to lapse into coma and even death," police inspector David Hudson said in a statement. "These animals are very hard to miss as they resemble a tarantula ... with nine millimeter (0.35 inch) long fangs," Hudson said. Stephen Weeks, owner of the Urban Animals Pet Center from where the spiders -- Selenecosmia sterling -- were stolen, said he did not sell the spiders for pets but kept them for display mounting. He appealed to the thieves for their return. "I don't care if they get left in a box on the back step ... I just want them back," Weeks told reporters.

A man accused of using the Internet to advertise a $25,000 reward for the contract killing of a US couple has denied the charges against him in court. Paul Clark, 32, from Portsmouth, Hampshire, pleaded not guilty to three charges of soliciting to murder, two counts of making threats to kill and one charge of causing fear of violence at Winchester Crown Court. The electrical engineer is alleged to have set up a website for the contract killing of Brandy Arnett and her husband Rick, from El Paso, Texas. It allegedly included their home address, telephone number and pictures of the couple on their wedding day. Mr Clark has been remanded in custody by Judge Michael Brodrick until 10 July. A hearing will take place at the same court to establish whether he will be tried in Britain or the United States.

Joseph F. Kopronica, a Lorain police officer pulled over a driver early Wednesday because the van she was driving appeared to be out of control. According to his police report, Nancy M. Lang, the 42-year-old driver not only seemed to be intoxicated, but said: "Please give me a break. I'm drunk." The woman failed sobriety tests. She could not stand on one leg or walk heel-to-toe. The officer told her that she was under arrest, but she replied: "Wait, I can do this." She then did five jumping jacks, one push-up and started to do a cartwheel, the officer's report said.

MANILA, Philippines, May 25 — In a heist that sounded like the case of the fugitive hijacker D.B. Cooper, a crying man tried to commandeer a Philippine Airlines jet carrying 291 people Thursday, then robbed everyone and jumped out of the plane wearing a homemade parachute. No one knows what happened to Cooper, who escaped by jumping out of a plane 29 years ago. But this man's fate is known: His body was found later in the day.

Thanks to Sgt. Hardert with the Brawley Police Dept. in Southern California for this great story!

Several Months Ago, One of My Officers Was Dispatched to a Local Grocery Store in Regard to a Burglary Which Had Just Occurred. The Officer Gathered a Description of the Suspect and Broadcast it to Responding Officers. It Was Later Learned the Suspect Had Taken Several Cans of Coffee. Two Solo Officers and Myself Later Arrived in the Front of the Store and Were Waiting to Speak with the Reporting Officer When He Exited the Store. We Now Had Four Police Units Parked Directly in Front of the Store. To Our Sunrise, We Saw a Subject Matching the Description of Our Suspect Approaching the Store on a Bike. The Suspect Rode in Front of the Store and Crashed into a Water Dispenser. This Caught the Attention of All Those Around. He Managed to Upright Himself and Again Began to Ride Toward the Entrance of the Store. This Time He Went Approximately Five Feet Before He Crashed into a Soda Machine. (Turns out the Suspect Was under the Influence of Heroin and Alcohol). As Amazed as I Was, I Was Able to Radio to the Reporting Officer to Tell Him the Suspect Was about to Enter the Store. The Suspect Saw the Officer Inside to the Store but Continued Through the Door. The Cashier Immediately Identified the Suspect. I Entered the Store Behind the Suspect and Saw the Stolen Coffee Cans Protruding from His Coat Pockets. The Suspect Was Placed under Arrest and Was Found to Be in Possession of a Small Amount of Methamphetamine. When Asked Why He Returned to the Store, the Suspect Stated He Had Left Behind a Drawing He Did Not Want Traced Back to Him. We Located this Drawing Which Had No Identifying Marks on it Which Could Have Lead Us to Our Brilliant Criminal.
