Elder brother of 92 Olympic steeplechase champion Matthew Birir.

Ex-holder world junior record with 8:24.47 in 91 Ð although some confusion over birthdate (it was given as 25.11.69 when entered for 88 World Junior). Holds world high altitude best of 8:12.9 in Nairobi in 92. Brother of Jonah Birir (5th 92 Oly 1500)
