Brian's Preseason Picks

As much as we all hate to mention or even think about it, the Buffalo Bills have started to rebuild the franchise. Gone are the mighty Bruce Smith (signed by Washington), Thurman Thomas (retired), Andre Reed (retired), and Jim Kelly (retired). The Bills have destroyed one of the great franchises of the nineties. What will happen in the next decade? Well, it started by releasing Boston College hero, Doug Flutie. Big mistake! Flutie is guiding the Chargers to a very successful season. It is like the Bills have been transplanted in San Diego. Good luck to Flutie and the Chargers.

Now, what is going on in Buffalo? They suck (1-7) because they are led by a third class quarterback that can't throw more than 50 yards. Rob Johnon is a quality back-up, but not an NFL starter. To make it even worse, Antawon Smith was given the pink slip and he is raising a ruckus in New England. Plus, what has happened to Eric Moulds? One year the pro bowl and the next the toilet bowl. However, there is one good story, and only one. The success of Pierless Price has amazed every critic of the former Volunteer receiver. This guy knows how to perform in big games. He is still underrated, but watch out if Price and Moulds get hot late in November.

Well, in my last report I mentioned about Jerry Rice possibly joining the Bills. Ralph Wilson thought he was washed up, but look at him now in silver and black. Enough of all this depressing news concerning the Bills. Ralph Wilson knows how to win football games and has a coaching staff that can execute the job. The Bills will get one of the top draft picks next spring and they just might find another Bruce Smith caliber player. Let's take a quick look at the remaining teams in the AFC east and other teams that look good.

Let's start with the Miami Dolphins: No Dan Marino= No chance, well not so fast says Jay fiedler! This team looks good. Defense wins football games and the offense wins the croud. Secondly, the New England Patriots. This team makes no sense. No Bledsoe should = No chance, but a guy named Brady has everyone fearing the Pats. Next, we'll take a look at the New York Jets. Martin is the man, but don't expect them to win more than 9 games at the most. Finally, the offensive minded Colts. This franchise has been one of the most inconsistent franchises during the ninties. First place on year then barely winning a game the next. The Manning, E. James, and Harrison combo will be hard to stop. "You can't stop them, you can only hope to contain them." The Colts will most likely win 10-12 games and the division. Finally, the Bills. I've talked enough about them, they suck.

My picks for the AFC play-off teams are: Colts, Steelers, Dolphins, Chargers, Ravens, and Raiders.

Now, let's take a closer look at the NFC. There are three main questions that I want to examine. First, can the Falcons bounce back from a piss poor 2000 campaign and regain their Super Bowl form? The answer to that is a big fat NO! Chris Chandler can't remain healty for an entire 16 game schedule, especially playing the majority of his games on turf. Jamal should return to his Pro Bowl caliber performance, but he can not carry the load of this team on his shoulders for the extent of the season. Although, with a strong performance on defense, an average schedule, and consisitant offense, the Falcons could make a suprising entrance to the play-offs as a Wild-card team. Second, can the Rams earn a second Super Bowl appearance in 2001? The answer to this question is also NO! Why? Free agency is the answer. A few years ago, the NFL adopted a free agent plan that would allow other teams to scout players after their contracts expire. To protect teams from losing major players, each team selected a franchise player that could not be touched and contract matches were accepted. So, what is the important role that free agency plays in the future for the Rams. Two words: the Buccs. The past two years, this team has added Brad Johnson, Keyshawn Johnson, and talent on defense to compete for a Super Bowl showcase in January. The Bucs are the best team on paper and have a good coach, but will go nowhere, not even to the playoffs. The NFC is too good and the Bucs will be dismanteled after their 8-8 finish. Now, the biggest free agent loser is the Washington Redskins. Over the last two seasons, they have built their team from primarily free agents and a few rookies. Brad Johnson, Bruce Smith, Deion Sanders, Dana Stublefield, Jeff George, and Michael Westbrook. Norv Turner's job is gone and Marty is in control. Finally, is their any other competition in the NFC besides the Rams, Pack, and Eagles? Probably not, but don't expect all three of these teams finish undefeated in their respective divisions. Chicago is a team that is building up its charisma to compete with the big boys in the NFC. Brian picks the play-off teams in the NFC as: Rams, Bears, Eagles, 49ers, Packers, and Giants. Welcome the Pack and Niners back to power.

Superbowl matchup: Green Bay Packers vs. Oakland Raiders. Well, that is why the NFL is played on the field and not on paper ....BILLS SUCK!!!!
