THE MUSIC WIRE-Dawkins & Dawkins
I'm pleased to bring you this interview with Anson Dawkins.
For those of you who haven't ever heard of Dawkins and Dawkins, they are a Christian R&B group.
Actually, I would consider them the top group of the Christian R&B genre.
This interview was conducted in September of 1999.
JIM: There was a 3-year break between your latest CD and your sophomore
release, what was going on for D&D in those three years?
ANSON: We were developing a greater sense of what God wanted to do in
our collective and individual lives. This was a time of testing and
preparation for what we are doing now.
JIM: Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop is the highest grossing style of music in
the secular industry. Why does Christian R&B/Hip-Hop get so little
recognition?
ANSON: All of the record label marketing departments has been
experimenting with how to get the music and message to the mainstream
and many have failed. but with label heads like Vicki Mack-Latillade of
Gospocentric and B-Rite showing that it is possible, things are changing
slowly, but surely.
JIM: What are some advantages and disadvantages of being in a group with
your brother?
ANSON: There is a genetic chemistry that gives us very similar vocal
tones and attitudes. also being in ministry/business with someone you
love and trust with your life. I don't think there are any disadvantages.
JIM: Who are some of your musical influences?
ANSON: Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Andrea Crouch, Rance Allen.
JIM: What groups do you listen to now?
ANSON: we listen to our peers a lot like, Virtue, Men of Standard, and
others. Also Blackstreet, Mint Condition I don't regularly listen to
secular music, because of lyrics that are offensive or do not correspond
with my lifestyle.
JIM: What was the last CD you bought?
ANSON:Nancey Jackson (Relationship)
JIM: What is your favorite movie?
ANSON: The Matrix.
JIM: Who is your favorite football team?
ANSON: Minnesota Vikings.
JIM: Finally, could you share your testimony with us?
ANSON: We are preacher kids that grew up in a loving Christian
household. We had holy lifestyles lived before us everyday, but we found
that we needed relationships with Jesus for ourselves. We spent much of
our teenage years as musicians in the church, but not disciplined
followers of Christ. It was in the years leading up to the hiatus that I
began to seek God out for myself. I have found that as I seek Him and
worship Him, He reveals more of Himself to me. So I make it my business
to seek Him and I continue to grow.
