THE LOMA PRIETA EARTHQUAKE OF 1989

On Tuesday, October 17, 1989 at 5:04 P.M. the city of San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area was rocked by one of the most devastating quakes in American history. The quake, famous for interrupting the '89 World Series, registered at a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale. Loma Prieta was felt from San Diego to Las Vegas . The marine district of San Francisco suffered several building collapses while a section of the Bay bridge, which connects the city to Oakland, crushed unsuspecting commuters.click here to see more damage There were 366 businesses that were completely destroyed and 3,530 that were extensively damaged. Residential areas were not immune to the quake's catastrophic events either. Over 1000 homes laid to waste while 20,000 more recieved sizeable damages. The estimated dollar loss was between 6-7 billion. There were 68 deaths and 3753 injuries which is an incredibly low statistic when the region and time of day are taken into consideration.
