The 2000 Legislative Session of the Georgia General Assembly adjourned
in the evening on Wednesday, March 22.

This year's legislative session was indeed a busy one (as usual).
The House of Representatives and Senate passed bills ranging from
creation of Agriculture supervisory boards to dealing with juvenile
courts.
There were literally hundreds of bills passed, but a few pieces of
legislation really stuck out. One of which, Governor Roy Barnes'
Education Reform plan. The plan was very controversial, sparking
partisan debate over it's many different planks. Among the things
changed in Georgia's education system, teacher tenure was virtually
eliminated. Most Democrats supported the legislation and most
Republicans attacked it and voted against it (as expected).
Governor Barnes has yet to veto any of the legislation passed by the
General Assembly.

***The Star Spot of the Session***
This year's Star Spot of the Session goes to Senator Don Balfour
(R-Snellville). On the floor of the Senate, Sen. Balfour started a
speech attacking Gov. Barnes' Education Reform Plan by saying,
"[Governor Barnes] is an S.O.B." After a long pause and being
stared at in amazement by colleagues and on-lookers, Balfour
finished the line by saying "Supreme Omnipotent Being."
Good one, Senator!!!!

POLITICAL PARTIES

Here you will find info on the two major parties in Georgia and
links to their websites, as well as links to 3rd parties' websites.

Georgia Democratic Party

Currently, the Democratic
party maintains its 100+ year
rule of Georgia and has a
majority in the Legislature
and a majority of
constitutional officers and
elected officials. The
Republican numbers are
growing, however, as GA's 11
member congressional
delegation is composed of 8
Republicans and our senior
U.S. Senator is also a
Republican.
