Important information for the new KLR owner!

Sorry folks, but I've grown a little tired of the perpetual, 'I've just bought a KLR, what should I do with it...' . Soooooo, I put this page up as a basic primer on KLR ownership, places to go, people to see, things to do, etc.. If anyone has any ideas they would like to add, please feel free to email me with your contributions!

New KLR Owner: Do the following!!!

  • Go to Dual Sport News Web Page, check out all the KLR info there.
  • Go to Dual Sport News Web Page, click on the KLR logo, join the KLR mailing list.
  • Go to Dual Sport News Web Page, click on the KLR logo, search the KLR mailing list archives.
  • Go to Fred Hink's Web Page, buy stuff from him, I personally recommend him, he can't be beat for getting parts and accessories fast. He is the type of guy to tell you when you would be better off NOT buying something from him if that is the case (Happened to me, I appreciate the honesty and integrity). Can't say enough good things about this guy (I hope he ain't reading this!).
  • Go to Dual Sport News Web Page, check out the Dual Star stuff, buy stuff from Mike Walburn, I personally recommend him, top quality dual sport stuff. This guy is a dual sport nut, probably knows more than anyone on the planet. If you have ever said to yourself, 'I wish someone would make a Widget for my KLR/XR/DR/XT...', call Mike, he probably either makes them or can get you one. Mike went to extreme measures to ensure I got a product I needed immediately, he really went the extra three miles. I look forward to purchasing more Dual Star stuff in the future.
  • Go to Happy Trails Motorcycle Products, check out Tim Bernard's accessories for the KLR, buy stuff from Tim, I personally recommend him, top quality dual sport stuff. This guy is referred to as Obe Wan on the KLR mailing list, where he is revered and damn near worshipped! ;) I have several of Tim's products; Highway pegs, radiator guard, and reservoir guard. These are all top-quality solid items.
  • Get a braided front brake line.
  • Get a Moose bash plate.
  • Get Progressive fork springs.
  • Get Avon AM24 Gripster tires.
  • Get Aerostich tank panniers, Ortlieb saddlebags, and most importantly, a Dual Star exhaust heat shield so you don't burn up your nice new Ortlieb's!
  • Get a RevPack Tourpack luggage bag.
  • Move your license plate up. Instead of using the two bolts on the top of your plate, use them on the bottom of your plate. It may take a little persuasion or bending depending on you state's plate size.
  • If you are looking for the best street-legal dirt tires for the KLR, take it from Fred - I would try out the Pirelli MT21 for the rear and the Dunlop K139 for the front. I don't think you will find a better long lasting DOT knobby combination than these. Well, I have a slightly different opinion. I have had three bad experiences with Dunlop tires on the front of different bikes I have owned. I will not purchase Dunlop tires again. I recommend the Pirelli MT-21's front and rear.
  • In my opinion, these are the minimal KLR requirements. Oops, almost forgot, get another credit card!
