What is the Colosseum Project?

The Colosseum Project was founded in summer 1997 by a collective of artists to organise exhibitions and performances in a derelict East End theatre, the Old Colosseum in Dalston, London.

The Old Colosseum

The Colosseum Project explored exhibition alternatives for artists; by using non-traditional environments, and techniques such as merging gallery and performance art, they aim to create a new and different experience for accessing and distributing art in the region and abroad. They initiated projects in a variety of venues: factories, church, synagogue, bank, prison.

In 2000 the Colosseum Project celebrated the Millennium by renaming themselves Luna Nera. They have continued their exploration of site-specific art practice with projects in many different spaces. They have worked in Russia and Germany and have upcoming shows in Switzerland and France as well as London. Luna Nera is a typical London art project - the artists come from all over Britain, Europe and North America. They are an international group reflecting London's status as a multi-national city.

The Artists

The founding members of Luna Nera are Gillian McIver, Sandrine Albert and Valentina Floris. Over the years we have had other members who have taken the opportunity to experiment with site -specific group practice, and we thanks them all for being involved. These are Stephanie Crouail, Caia, Chris Singer, Nicoela Green, Jairo Zaldua, Michael Park and Mark Video.

The current members of the group are Gillian McIver, Sandrine Albert, Valentina Floris, Hilary Powell and Julian Ronnefeldt. The group is also collaborating with Ben Foot.

In addition we have worked with many guest artists and performers.

"We are seeking to consummate the union between gallery art and performance, making art a more lively and accessible experience. We need to reclaim our independence from an often too commercial and censored gallery environment; this is an important step which also enables us to reach new audiences."
