ACA President speaks to Rotarians
August 12, 2005, Friday 12noon
ACA President, Stan Howard, represented the ACA well when he
presented a speech all about our club: current and future astronomy in the area
and in the world, to 60 members of the Martinez-Evans Chapter of International
Rotary Clubs. He invited them and their families to join,
visit and/or contribute to our club, and several were interested.
Stan talked about current events: the Perseid Meteor shower, and the launch of the Mars orbiter just this
morning. He mentioned the founder of our club, Jerry Barton, and some of the
public service projects and star parties we have sponsored over the years.
Tedda ran a computer with internet and projector, while Stan described our
website. He highlighted some of our club awards, linked photos of the earth at
night and International Dark Sky Association lighting recommendations, and
spoke briefly about Atmospheric Phenomena.
At each table we provided a calendar of ACA meetings, and a letter
requesting a sponsor for our Community Star Party in December. Several
Rotarians asked questions, and stayed late to discuss our club further. Stan
received a small globe in a plexiglass paperweight with Rotary International
written in it. Tedda received a lovely rose bouquet.
