One of OSHA's favorite NO NO words is very prominently displayed before you get into the how to use the product. That word is WARNING. In letters not much smaller is Keep out of the reach of children. The product can cause eye irritation. It is harmful if swallowed.
You are advised not to get it in eyes or on clothing. Avoid contact with skin. Wash hands after handling product. That's just the part about humans. Under that is a statement about hazards to domestic animals. Not to use on puppies under the age of four weeks, pregnant or nursing animals, aged or debilitated animals and if your animal is on any medication consult with the veterinarian first. I find that this statement is strange because you can only get this magic bullet from a licensed veterinarian. And your veterinarian should know the types of medications that are prescribed for his or her patient.
This medication is for use only on dogs. The product information does caution you that reinfestation from the emergence of new fleas in the environment may continue to occur for six weeks.
"Advantage" is applied directly to the dogs skin at the shoulders. There is a very attractive diagram of how to remove the top of the medication container and where to place the medicine on the dog.
The product literature didn't explain how the medication worked. A client explained to me what she had been told by her veterinarian who recommended both "Program" and "Advantage" for her dog who has FAD. "Advantage" is supposed to float on the skins surface killing fleas that come into contact with it.
Considering the warnings on the label I supposed you are never to pet this animal who has been treated again as long as this chemical is on his body. How many people wash their hands after petting the dog? My grandmother used to mention something about that when I was little. I always thought that was a little extreme. I know dogs who will do anything to get you to pet them. Some for hours. We didn't have stuff like this on the market then we just had fleas.
Next week another of the new products guaranteed to rid your world of this pesky insect. Why am I worrying about the dogs?
