Comparison of Some Label Claims of Products Used for Internal and External Parasite Control of Pets
1. Advantage® Topical Solution (Bayer Corporation) Once-a-month topical flea treatment for dogs and cats. For
the prevention and treatment of flea infestations. Kills 98-100% of fleas on pets within 12 hours. Re-infesting fleas are
killed within two hours. One treatment prevents further flea infestation for up to four weeks. Kills fleas before they
lay eggs. Larval flea stages in the pet’s surroundings are killed following contact with an Advantage® treated pet.
2. Revolution™ (Pfizer) Kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching for one month and is indicated for the
prevention and control of flea infestations prevention of heartworm disease and the treatment and control of ear mite
infestations in dogs and cats. Revolution also is indicated for the treatment and control of sarcoptic mange and for the
control of tick infestations in dogs, and the treatment of intestinal hookworm and roundworm infections in cats.
3. Frontline Top Spot® (Merial) ( Fipronil ) The small dose of fipronil dissolves into the natural oils of your pet's
skin and coat. The flea and tick life cycles are then broken because the adults die before they can lay any of their eggs.
It is a pre-measured topical liquid that eliminates fleas for 1 month or more, and kills ticks for 1 month.
4. Heartgard® Plus Chewables (Merial) Heartgard® Plus Chewables (ivermectin/pyrantel) are
indicated for use in dogs to prevent canine heartworm disease by eliminating the tissue stage of heartworm larvae for
a month (30 days) after infection and for the treatment and control of ascarids and hookworms.
5. Sentinel® and Sentinel® Flavor Tabs® (Novartis) Sentinel® and Sentinel® Flavor Tabs® are indicated for the
prevention of heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis, for the prevention and control of flea populations, the
control of adult Ancylostoma caninum (hookworm), and the removal and control of adult Toxocara canis and
Toxascaris leonina (roundworm) and Trichuris vulpis (whipworm) infections in dogs.
6. Drontal® Plus (Bayer Corporation) Drontal® Plus Broad Spectrum Anthelmintic Tablets are indicated for
removal of Tapeworms and removal and control of Echinococcus multilocularis. For removal of Hookworms and
Whipworms in dogs. Do not use in pregnant animals.
7. Drontal® (Bayer Corporation) Drontal tablets will remove Tapeworms, Hookworms, and Large Roundworms in
cats and kittens.
