Capricorn Part 2

"Bova, get over here!" Miss Davenport cried. "We don’t know enough about this planet to be out and about like this. Let’s just get along, please."

"But Miss Davenport-" Bova started.

"No!" The sound of her own voice made Davenport jump. "I said no, I meant no!"

She started walking toward the Christa.

"How unfair!" Bova cried. "How come we don’t get to explore?"

"Maybe she thinks you’re too young," Radu said.

"Oh, what do you know?" Bova screamed. He ran off after Davenport.

"You’re right," Radu said to himself. "I guess I’m ignorant, aren’t I?"

He plopped down next to a rock.

"What do you think you’re doing?"

Radu got up quickly. He didn’t see anyone.

"Hello?" he said. "Who’s there?"

"Its me," a voice said.

"Where are you?" he asked.

"I’m right here," she said. "Right in front of you."

"Well I can’t see you."

She laughed. "Of course you can’t see me!" she said. "I’m invisible."

"But why?"

"Why?" she asked. "Because I am. Its the law that I have to follow or I die."

"What are you talking about?"

She sighed. "Maybe its because this isn’t a tourist planet. And its the law that all Jovians on this planet must follow."

"What’s a Jovian?"

She laughed. "You know, Jupiter? A planet? See, a few years ago there was a planet war started by the Callistonians. I mean, the moon Callisto. The people? Anyway, most of us had to leave. It was either that or-"

"Radu!" Suzee called. "Who are you talking to?"

That was when Radu got his first look at the girl. She was tall, extremely skinny, and had green streaks through her dark brown hair.

"Streaky!" he said.

"Excuse me?" she said.

"Your hair, its…." His voice trailed off.

"My name is Jewel Prosperity Tamsin. But plain Jewel is fine."

"Streaky," he said, and Jewel sighed.

"Jewel, dummy. I need to know why you’re on this planet."

"I- I don’t know," Radu replied honestly. "My Commander made us land the ship here."

"Who is your Commander?"

"Seth Goddard."

"Oh." The girl was quiet.

Trying to make conversation, Radu said, "So. Do you live around here?"

"Yes," Jewel said. "I live in that cavern." She pointed.

"You live in a cavern?"

"Don’t make fun of poor people!" she yelled.

At that, the entire crew came out of the ship.

Jewel looked at the cadets.

"What is going on here?" Goddard asked.

"YOU!" Jewel cried, pointing her finger at Davenport.

"What? What?" Davenport said.

Jewel grabbed her. "You know perfectly well that if you’re going to talk to aliens, you have to be invisible. Its the law!"

"But I am an alien-" Davenport started to say.

"Come on, I am going to have to report you to Koby. I knew the day would come when someone would not listen to Koby. I knew it; I really did. And did you get your test taken yet? Where are your kids?"

"I don’t have any kids," Davenport said.

Jewel laughed. "Boy, are you gonna be in trouble when Koby finds out!"

Jewel pulled Davenport away, with Davenport screaming at the top her lungs:

"I don’t belong here!"

The crew was flabbergasted. Nobody knew what to do next.

"What test?" Goddard asked.

"Kids?" Suzee cried.

"Get her back!" Rosie cried.

Miss Davenport was gone.
