The Stancil Family

The date of death of my grandfather, John P. Starks is unknown. I have been unable to find any paperwork so far. But my father, William P. Starks, was about 9 or 10 when his father died. My father was born in 1868 so John Starks died before 1880.

Samuel A. Stancil married Nancy E. Whisenant Starks either in 1877 or 1878 since there is a daughter shown being born about 1878.

Samuel A. Stancil was the son of Samuel & Rutha Stancil of Gilmer County, Georgia. Both Samuel and Rutha were born in South Carolina.

Samuel and Rutha Stancil had the following children:

1. Elizabeth 'Betsy' Stancil (August 02, 1832--May 27, 1902). Married Isham K. Blaylock
2. Louisa R. 'Polly' Stancil
3. William A. Stancil
4. Syntha A. Stancil
5. Frances L. Stancil
6. Emily J. Stancil
7. Martha L. Stancil
8. Samuel A. Stancil (March 24, 1849--October 07, 1909)
9. John R. Stancil

Nancy E. Whisenant Starks Stancil was the daughter of George and Mary 'Holly' Hoppis Whisenant. The surname is spelled quite a few different ways with Whisenant and Whisenhunt being the main ones in my family.

George and Holly had the following children:

1. Mary A. Whisenant (Abt 1839--?)

2. Harriet Catherine Whisenant (June 14, 1841--1871) Married twice: Samuel M. Plemons & George Washington Elliott

3. Margaret Sarphonie Whisenant (August 1843--January 22, 1917). Married David M. James, Sr.

4. Samuel P. Whisenant (May 11, 1847--April 22, 1936). Married 3 times: Mary R. Gates; Elza A. Unknown; Vista Ann Unknown

5. Nancy Elizabeth Whisenant (March 22, 1848--January 21, 1908) More Info Below

6. George W. Whisenant (February 24, 1849--?). Married Sarah E. Starks, sister of John P. Starks and daughter of Thomas Jefferson & Catherine Nelson Starks.

7. Sarah Jane Whisenant (February 24, 1849--February 02, 1935). Married Samuel Houston Holifield (1858--1894). Sarah is buried at Sugar Creek Methodist Church Cemetery, Bradley County, Tennessee

8. Holly Whisenant (September 1851--May 13, 1927). Holly married Levi Key (Mar 10, 1845--Jan 28, 1928), son of Rice Key, Sr. & Sarah Bullen. Levi and Holly had at least 7 children. They are both buried in the Cochran Cemetery, Englewood, McMinn Co., TN.

9. John Henry Whisenant (July 22, 1853--July 17, 1936). He married Mary Ellen Jetton (July 13, 1852--Aug 11, 1928) on July 20, 1876 in St. Clair, Alabama. John Henry and Mary Ellen died in Prue, Osage County, Oklahoma.

Sam and Nancy Stancil had at least 6 children. There is a possibility that they had 7 but I don't have any definite information besides the 1900 census for Whitfield County, Georgia. It shows that Nancy has had 8 children with 7 surviving. There is no records indicating that she and John Starks had any children besides my father, William P. Starks. For the time being, I am operating under the assumption that Sam and Nancy had 7 children with 6 surviving.

Known Children of Sam & Nancy:

1. Rebecca J. Stancil (Abt 1878--?) Not found after the 1880 census.

2. George A. Stancil (January 1880-?) Married Sarah Jane Epperson (Abt 1882--Feb 7, 1972)

3. Emma Stancil (January 5, 1881--July 22, 1966). Married Abner M. Bennett (Mar 23, 1878--Sep 29, 1963) on September 30, 1897. Both are buried in the Hopewell Baptist Cemetery, Cohutta, Whitfield County, Georgia.

4. Andrew J. Stancil (October 12, 1884--March 23, 1949). Married Sarah Exie Patty.

5. Jasper N 'Jack' Stancil (December 1886--?) Born in Whitfield County, Georgia and died in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1910, Jack Stancil was stationed aboard the USS Iowa. In 1930, he was living in Cromwell Rd, Norfolk, Virginia and worked at the shipyard as a marine engineer. Believe that he married a Margaret Snow. The 1930 census shows his brother-in-law, Luke Snow and his 17 year old son, Paul Snow. Have been unable to confirm date of death for Jack. His son, Edwin T. Stancil died in Virginia Beach, Virginia in January 1973. No info on his 2 daughters, Thelma B. Stancil and Shirley Mae Stancil.

6. James Edgar Stancil (August 26, 1888--March 24, 1968). James 'Jim' Stancil moved to Pecan Gap, Texas. There he married Zuela Lorraine Woods (1896--August 04, 1967). Jim and Zula had 4 sons. They are both buried in the Leonard Cemetery, Leonard, Fannin County, Texas.

After the death of Nancy, Samuel A. Stancil married,
Stella Southerland (born Jan-22-1885 died Jun-06-1961)

After the death of Samuel, Stella married a David Hagin. They had one known child, Ben F. Hagin.

Samuel, Nancy, Stella and David are all buried at Concord Cemetery, Whitfield County, "Cohutta", Georgia. Shown below are the tombstones. From left to right, it's Nancy, Samuel, Stella & David.
