 | | Welcome to
MRL SlingShot's Racing Tips and Advice for DTR & DTR2.
I will share my opinions on
driver etiquette based on my past experiences. I hope you give my suggestions
some thought and maybe in someway you can benefit from them. This is
a fun game to play and even more fun when you make new friends online.
Rule
Number 1, This is a game .... Keep it in Prospective !
 | Learn as much
about the settings and controls offline as you can. Optimize your computer
by shutting down all programs except your online access and the game. You
should be able to beat the computer cars before taking on the big dogs
online. |
 | When you start
game you enter main menu. To play online select multiplayer. Make sure your
handling difficulty is set at Pro 100 realism. Select continue and on the
next page select Browser on the bottom of the page. You will see a
list of servers pop up. There is useful information posted on most servers.
Some tell you an address for their team. Others may show a type of add-on
car or track they are running. Look at this
example and see a variety of the messages posted on servers. You see
track names like orange county you will need to download the track to play.
Refer to my guide on the left "setup add-on guide" when adding
tracks, cars or setups to your game. |
 | Pay attention to
what is said in the chat room. Your car#, initials or part of your name will
be used to get your attention. If someone tells you that you are hitting
them, figure out why. If you don't stop hitting other players you will be
booted and sometimes banned from servers. |
 | When you are the
host on DTR2 I would
suggest setting room limit to 6 players to avoid the warp. With dial up
drivers present this is a must. I have not seen a good start on any server
with more than 7 drivers or so! |
 | Understand how lag
affects the game and learn how to deal with it when you are racing. If your
ping to a room is 400 when you enter, You can expect to have an actual ping
of about half that or 200. If your ping or someone else's is higher than 200 you will most
likely be a burden on the game. If you are the host and want someone to
leave, explain why you are asking them to leave prior to booting them when
necessary. We are at a level of play where high pings
are no longer acceptable. Its unfortunate but true. If you want to play
online you need to budget a high speed connection into your spending money. |
 | When running
add-on cars or downloaded tracks you should do it in a private server. You
will get frustrated with people entering the game and knocking your cars or
tracks offline and they too get frustrated with with entering and leaving
public servers setup for regular game play. If you want to set up your
server to play add-on's and register it with gamespy make sure your comments and server name provide
information about your add-on items. |
 | When racing with
a long name such as MRL_SlingShot and someone asks you to shorten your name
simply go to player setup and shorten it to MRL_Ss or just Ss. The names can
be very distracting when tight racing is going on. I have raced with player
names that were as wide as the track. Its simply courtesy and
BERL_Ricky_Bobby just don't get it. There will always be those who don't
care how their play affects others. |
 | Remember
that this game is played by all ages and some people, including myself,
don't appreciate their children or family members being subject to abusive
or foul language. They learn it fast enough without help from dtr chat
rooms. If you feel the need to express yourself use discretion aka WTF
..... LOL or use that corny language you hear from your parents ... |
 | When I enter a server with racers I
generally will just ride along for first race or two even if I know the
racers. Your reputation you build under your race name means a lot. To enter
a race and plow to the front spinning people on accident does not help your
image as a clean driver. We all know there is lag at starts and your job is
to learn how to drive clean even when there is lag. If you just cruise for a
race or two you can get a feel for the lag and its always fun to post a lap
just a bit faster than the others to let them know you will soon be door to
door with them and trading paint. If there are 10 racers and I am starting
8-10 I don't even attempt to try to win the race unless its 20 laps or
something. I am very conscious about bumping my way to the front. |
 | Get to know your fellow drivers and race
with the ones that you enjoy racing with. Some guys are real chatters and
they race one race every 10 minutes. That can be frustrating when you are in
race mode. When there's shop talk going on it may be to your advantage to
just stick it out and listen. You get good setup tips and techniques for
driving the track a bit faster from these motor mouths some times. LOL If
you try to rush them you will certainly be ignored and maybe even booted.
Again getting to know the other drivers is important and perhaps you will
find yourself actively chatting with them. |
 | When you are the host on a server its
your job to maintain a good racing atmosphere for everyone. If you have one
bad apple in the group and he's causing problems, warn him and if that don't
work pull out the Stetsons. If you don't boot the bad apple you will find
yourself racing with him and him alone because all the good clean racers
will leave. Don't tolerate any backwards driving at any time and if you see
rough drivers warn them and watch them. Anytime guys start to bicker and
start to threaten with paybacks its a no win situation. Sometimes I will
just ride around in the back and watch them like a ole-mother-hen and make
my own decisions on who's doing what. When you want to change tracks tell
everyone ahead of time. After this race we will change tracks. There's
nothing more frustrating then having 10 guys all setup to race and have a
host change the track at the last moment. Another thing to watch for is high
pings and guys without cd's. Know the commands for hosting, here are
some |
