Trouble Shooting Dirt Track Racing DTR1 & DTR2
Whenever you have a computer problem there
are basic things you should do to fix the problem.
Note the error message exactly as
displayed.
What changes have I made recently to my
computer? *******
Note what function or action you were doing
when it occurred.
Note what programs were open at same time
the error occurred.
Has this error happened before?
Usually you can resolve problems quickly by
using the kiss method
kiss = keep it simple stupid
If your game was working and you installed
a new file....
Always look at things you have done most
recent to change your pc. or game.
There are files that provide details on the dtr
errors. They are called errorlog.txt and error.log and in windows 98 they are in
the "my documents" folder. Open these with a text program like notepad
or microsoft word.
Error I had recently
Nov 2006
I received this error , registry restore error resing file '
data\cars\latecamaro\car.str parsing failure. I
couldnt get the game to start. I read my error logs found in my documents.
(They used to be on c drive and now i found them in my documents.) Look
for "Error.txt" and "error.log" files in your my documents
folder. Details in these files showed me there was a memory access problem and a
problem reading from a certain .str file. The problem was found in the store.pf and store.pfb files.
I removed those files and
replaced them with 2 from my cd and the game started right up.
Example of information in error.log file
** Error Information
etrace: file www. bh motorsports.com.txt in skin directory
is not a directory
Module: skinlist.c
Line: 276
Common sense will point you to a skin u
downloaded from a site that had a file in the wrong folder. Remove that file and
its fixed.
"During launch, an error appears that mentions an 'Hresult Error at
initialize sound' and then the game quits."
There are two possible solutions to this problem.
First, turn off sound hardware acceleration in Windows like this:
- Click the Windows Start button.
- Select Settings.
- Select Control Panel.
- Double click the Multimedia icon.
- Click the "Advanced Properties" button.
- Click the Performance tab
- Move the slider bar next to "Hardware Acceleration"
down to "None".
- Click on OK.
- Try the game.
"The game locks up whenever I select one of the late-model cars."
This problem can occur if your sound card drivers are out of date. Download
and install the latest driver version available for your card and then try
playing again. To learn more about updating your sound drivers, refer to our How
to Update your Drivers FAQ.
If this doesn't work, then you may need to turn down your sound hardware
acceleration settings in Windows. For instructions, please see the "Error
Messages" section of this document.
"Whenever I launch the game it freezes on a Black Screen or quits back
to the Windows Desktop without any error message."
"The game locks up or crashes randomly throughout the game".
"I have a VooDoo 2 card and the game crashes when I start a new
race."
Set your graphics mode to Direct3D manually, instead of letting the
auto-detect do it for you. This should fix the problem.
"I'm using a 'GeForce' video card and cannot see the mouse pointer while
playing."
Download and install the latest patch available here,
currently version 1.03. This should fix the problem. If it does not, then
download and install the latest driver available for your GeForce card from http://www.nvidia.com.
"The colors or textures in the game don't display correctly."
Make sure that you have installed DirectX version 7.0 or higher on your system
before playing. If you have already done this and the problem occurs anyway,
then you'll need to update your video card drivers with the latest versions
available from the manufacturer.
For more information about DirectX, please see our DirectX
Frequently Asked Questions.
To learn how to update your video card drivers, refer to our How
to Update your Drivers FAQ.
"There are black boxes all over the screen."
Turn down video hardware acceleration in Windows. Windows acceleration may be
conflicting with DirectX. If this doesn't work, update your video card
drivers.
To learn how to adjust Windows video hardware acceleration, refer to our Windows
95/98 Video Troubleshooting FAQ.
To learn how to update your video card drivers, refer to our How
to Update your Drivers FAQ.
"The game starts to install, but then stops partway through."
"Nothing happens when I insert the game CD into my CD-ROM drive."
The Windows 95/98 AutoPlay feature may be disabled on your system. You can
either enable AutoPlay, or install the game using the Manual installation
instructions as listed at the top of this document.
For help with enabling AutoPlay, please see our Windows
95/98 General Troubleshooting FAQ.
"I can't hear any sound or music in the game."
- Make sure that your speakers are turned on and any volume controls on
them are turned up.
- Check your Windows volume settings by clicking on the small yellow
speaker icon on your taskbar.
If none of the steps above work, then make sure you have installed DirectX
version 7.0 from the CD, or the latest version available from Microsoft. If
you have already tried this too, then you'll need to update your sound card
drivers to the latest version available from the manufacturer.
For more information about DirectX, please see our DirectX
Frequently Asked Questions.
To learn how to update your video card Drivers, refer to our How
to Update your Drivers FAQ.
"The game is reporting a 'sound init error'."
This problem occurs when the sound card drivers installed on your machine are
not fully compatible with DirectX 7, which installs automatically when you
install the game. To solve this problem, you need to update your sound card
drivers with the manufacturer of the card.
To learn how to update your sound card Drivers, refer to our How
to Update your Drivers FAQ.
This game uses Microsoft's DirectX for all graphics and sound effects. It
cannot run properly unless DirectX version 7.0 or higher is installed on your
computer. It may also exhibit problems if the video card and/or sound card in
your computer are not 100% DirectX 7.0 compliant.
Re-install DirectX from the Dirt Track Racing CD, then reboot your computer
and try playing the game again. For instructions, see the section near the top
of this document labeled "DirectX Installation".
If the problem still occurs, then you'll need to update your video and/or
sound card drivers with the latest versions available from the manufacturer.
Please note that instructions for setting up and playing multiplayer games can
be found on pages 11-13 of your game manual. Also, DirectX version 7.0 or
higher must be installed on your computer before playing.
If you are playing on GameSPY with a full room of ten players, in which one or
more of those players is pinging at 500 or over, you may experience such weird
effects as flying cars. We are working on a patch to solve this problem and
will post it here when available.
"I'm using an analog controller such as a Thrustmaster T1 or Interact V3
and it won't work right in the game."
Some controllers use software drivers that are not totally compatible with
this game. To fix the problem, you'll need to uninstall all of your
controllers from the "Game Controllers" control panel in Windows,
and then re-install the one you want to use as a standard 2-axis, 4 button
joystick. When done, be sure to calibrate and test the device to be sure that
it's working right before you play.
"The game's performance suffers when I'm using my Microsoft Force
Feedback Wheel".
This can occur on systems that only barely meet the system requirements that
are listed on the box and at the top of this document. Installing the latest
drivers available for your steering wheel can reduce this effect. If you're
already using the latest drivers and the problem still occurs, then reduce the
amount of feedback and/or reduce the number of additional cars on the road.
"I've encountered a problem that was not mentioned in this
document."
- Make sure that your system meets the minimum system requirements as
listed on the box and at the top of this document. If your system does not
meet or exceed the minimum requirements, it will run poorly, or not at
all.
- Shut down all other programs that you may have running on your system
prior to playing Dirt Track Racing. Other programs can interfere with the
operation of the game. For detailed instructions on shutting down all of
your other applications, please see the windows facts sheet at
microsoft.com/.
- Make sure you have plenty of room left you your hard drive, or windows
may not have enough room for a swap file. This can cause some very strange
problems.
- Make sure that the CD itself is not dirty or damaged in any way. If the
CD is dirty, it can be cleaned. Most computer stores carry inexpensive
CD-ROM cleaning kits that will safely restore your CD. If you want to try
cleaning the CD without a kit, you can wash the CD using lukewarm water,
MILD NON-ABRASIVE dish soap, and a very soft and clean COTTON cloth. Do
NOT use any kind of paper product or abrasive soap to clean the CD, as
these WILL scratch! Once the CD is clean, be sure to let the CD dry
completely before inserting it into your CD-ROM, or damage may result.
- If the CD is scratched or physically damaged in any way, you may need to
send it in for replacement.
- Try uninstalling, and then re-installing the game.
