Throughout the book Fever 1793, Matilda Cook struggles to survive the yellow fever in Philadelphia in 1793.In her efforts, she faces many obstacles, while at the same time, she is helped by many people.Many of the people or things that Mattie encounters are based on real historical figures of that time.

The author of the book, Laurie Halse Anderson, included many historical references in the story which allow this historicalfiction novel to have real authenticity.To help us to better understand what was going on in Philadelphia at that time, we will research several of these references and determine their significance in the novel.
