Cyber Journal

January 23, 2006

Hello my name is Jessica Rae and I'm in the only class in Yankton High School of Cyber-Soph. I really don't like reading and you have to be pretty good with computers which really am not. This class is very different from other English classes I have been in before. In this class we use the computers everyday to do different projects and on Fridays we write about the book we are reading.

How is this class different from other English classes you've had? -March 1, 2006-This class if very different from other classes. We use computers every day and it's sometimes an advantage and sometimes it's just a hassle. Most English classes we learn about grammar and different things having to do with our vocabulary. In this class, we do a lot of different things with books and reading and analyzing what is going on in the stories we read.

How do you feel about being in a Cyber comp class?-March 1, 2006- I mostly like being in a Cyber comp class. For one thing, I stay with the same group of people for the whole year which is a good thing. There are a lot of fun people in this class, and all of my other classes really. Other times though, I really don't like being in a cyber class. Computers can sometimes be really confusing and frustrating like when the system is down or when the computers are just really really slow.

What have you learned?-March 2, 2006- In this class, I have learned quite a lot about computers and how to hyperlink things and even how to put together a website. I can't wait to complete another big group assignment. Whenever I get finished with one of those I feel really good, like I accomplished a lot, something that other students in the school might not know how to do.

How have you changed (if you have changed)? March 9, 2006- I haven't changed too much since starting Cyber Comp, but in ways I think I have a little.  I am now more familiar with computer applications and the internet itself.  I have become more organized and able to meet the deadlines that are set out for me.  We have had many projects and assignments that are due over the long term, and trying not to procrastinate doing them, and getting them done right away is a challenge in which I've gotten a lot better at. These are just a few of the things I can think of, that I have changed in over the course of this semester.  Hopefully there will be many more positive changes to come.

What will you do with what you have learned? -3-16-06-I will hopefully be able to use the skills that I obtain from cyber comp in many aspects of my life in the future. With the computer skills I have learned I will be able to use technology in my future projects and assignments, and even someday my career.  We have learned many group skills too.  Throughout this class I have learned to be patient and to work better with my fellow classmates.  Hopefully this will also be a help to me in the future.  Lastly, I have read a ton more now, that I'm in this class, than before.  This helps me to become a better speller, and will eventually lead to my grammar and writing skills improving.  This will in turn benefit my test scores, and make my scholarship applications and such sound more intelligent to the person reading them.

What are some of the goals you have set for yourself that Cyber comp 10 may help you develop or understand. - Well, I'm not sure that I have any goals that i really have set for myself. I'm not really all that into computers and things of that sort. I'm really bad with computers and hyper linking and I get really frustrated when I try and do things and I get really confused. But if had to set a goal it would probably be learning how to work with computers and hyper link things a little better. I know the basic concept but I wish I could do it quicker. I think the cyber comp. class could help me to do that.

What's your favorite thing about your web page and why? My favorite thing about my website is the adventure story. It was actually kind of fun making up a story with different paths to take and about five different outcomes. The hyper linking for this was a breeze. I'm not sure why it was so much easier to hyper link this project together than any other project but it was.

What has been most challenging or frustrating for you and how have you met the challenge or overcome the frustration? The thing in this class that was the most frustrating is when we read the books and then talked about them with the college students. I really liked the book I read but I the computer were driving me crazy. My first entry I put in didn't show up, so then I had to re-do it again next time and that worked. The next time I went to put in an entry, I guess it didn't show up because it's not in the grade book, so I was behind a little on the blogs with them, oh well i guess.

Do you feel more confident about any of your skills in computers or writing? Explain. I feel more confident about my skills in writing than my computer skills. I am much faster at learning and writing on paper. A lot of times on the computer I mess up typing or say what I don't really want to say. But then again, I really like typing and it goes a whole lot faster than writing things out on paper and pencil.

Do you ever find yourself helping others to learn something?  How does that feel? Is this a normal role for you or new to you? Yes, I often find myself helping others learn things, not necessarily inthis class because usually I'm being helped by others in this class. This isn't really a new role for me since I'm usually pretty smart in other classes, so then I can usually help others with things.

If an outsider visited your site, what would you hope he or she would think about? If an outsider visited my site I hope they would think it is cool. I spent a whole lot of time on it and I would hope they would like it. I hope they would especially like adventure story because it's actually something they can interact with and make choices that give them different outcomes. And I hope that you like it too.

Today P. Schulze was gone so I really don't know what to write about. Right now we're reading the chocolate war, which I'm really not looking forward to. I can't really get into this book yet.

Has knowing that you have  an audience beyond your teacher affected your need for revision in any way?

~ When I know that there are more people reading than just my teacher and classmates it really doesn't phase me and me need for revision. Even though the whole world can go on my website I really don't think anyone will. Maybe the only stretch of people who would read read it would be my family members.

Colors of my Day

This morning my mood was blue, it's a Friday and I REALLY didn't want to get out of bed! On top of that, one of my friends who was supposed to call me, of course did not.. once again for the 2nd night in a row.. also my first period is Geometry with Mr. Schaefer and that class is so frustrating. I'm just ready to be done with that class but the assignments and things just keep getting harder.

Later in the day, my mood was more of an orange.. In band we had a study hall which we just layed around in and in homeroom we talked about the latest gossip which is always a good thing. I LOVE hearing about all that stuff.

My day just kept getting better as the colors began to brighten. In biology we drew pictures of the human heart and lungs and pretty much just sat and chilled. After that was Espanol and today is  cinco de mayo. But, we had to take a test. Lunch was a BLAST as well. We played this stupid game and we were all laughing so hard and I'm sure all the people around us were getting really annoyed but we really could care less.

After lunch we had Spanish again, nothing that cool really happened, but then we had study hall and just sat and talked because I really didn't want to do any of my homework. Then today was fun in "Momma  Schulze's" class. W read the book colors by Dr. Seuss and Mrs. Schulze puts so much excitement into her reading it makes it so funny. Next period is Mr. Pesicka's class of World History. His classes are usually a lot of fun but since it's 8th period it seems to last FOREVER!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today we read the book THE LORAX By: Dr. Seuss.

- If I had to decide if I am more like the Lorax or the Once-ler, sadly, I would compare myself more to the Once-ler just because I really have no time to help save the environment. But I guess I'm not really that much like the Once-ler since I don't really ruin the environment in such huge ways that he did. I do think that it is very important to follow the ways of the Lorax and keep our environment clean. I think it's really important to have lots of trees because without trees we wouldn't be able to breath! Then we would all die!
