Battle royal book report
Plot
It’s the turn of the century and 18% of jobs are out. Chaos spreads thought the minds of the youth and constant outbreaks of violence appear rapidly. The government must take action. The fascist dictatorship of the Republic of Greater Eastern Asia allows the military to take action into there own hands and create a disciplinary act to teach the youth a lesson or two about how it’s a dog eat dog world. Thus the out come, Battle Royal.
First an island is completely deserted, drop everything and leave. Refusing to follow orders results in death. Then a random 3rd year class is chosen. This class will be taken away to the unknown island and there they will be forced to play a game of kill or be killed. They are each given a bag with three bottles of water, an island map, a compass, and a weapon. Girls are aloud to take their bags with them for personal reasons. Every 6 hours, that 4 times a day, an announcement will be broadcasted across the island informing the class mates witch student have died in the last 6 hours have died. To make things better the broadcasts will also inform the student on witch sections of the island will be danger zones. Once a danger zone is activated it will remain active for the entire game, just to keep you moving.
The students are knocked out before they reach the island. In this time that they are unconscious a metal chocker like device will be placed around there necks. The cockers will send a transition to HQ telling them their direct position. If the student is in a danger zone then the chocker will explode. If the student attempts to pry it loose…it will explode.
Around the island are patrol boats, so anyone attempting to escape by sea will be terminated. The game last 3 day, or until one student remains. If more then one student is alive after 3 days, then all the cockers will explode.
The exact location of the island is not given, nor the name of the island, but it is located in East Asia.
My Reaction to the novel:
This is by far the most amazing book I have ever read in my life. No matter who you are you can find a character in this book you can relate to. I nearly broke out in tears when Mitsuko was killed (she was the character that I found I could relate with the best).
It really shows you how much peoples trust for one another changes when under pressure, and who are really your friends, The Sacrifices that some people have to make for love, for their friends, for there life. It hurts your soul just thinking about it.
“Could you kill your best friend?”
There are so many hidden meaning in this book, but not everybody can see them. They just pay attention to the gore, and it’s a shame. This is too good of a book to go to waste. But this book is defiantly meant for a teenage audience, although adults would find it just as entertaining, but I would not have as much meaning to them.
Great Lines:
“It was only when Yuka said, “let’s have a taste then” that Yuko suddenly looked up.
She turned around…and saw Yuka lift the dish and put it against her mouth. She should have used the ladle if she wanted a taste. Instead she had to put her mouth against that dish, the one she’d sprinkled with the half-transparent powder….”
(Continues on farther) Yukie shook her body, but the dark-red foam only continued to spill out the sides of her mouth. Her eyes were open as wide as possible, as if on the verge of popping out, but now even the whites of her eyes were turning red. For some reason—inflammation or broken capillaries—dark-red and black spots began appearing all over her blue face, transforming it into the mask of some grotesque monster.” Page 490

Main Characters
Shuya Nanahara - Boys #15
-Shua was orphaned after is father committed suicide. In the orphanage he befriended Nobu and learned how to play rock on his guitar, witch is illegal. Shua first encounters Battle royal while watching a news report.
“an image of what appeared to be “the winner”, a girl clad in a tattered sailor suit uniform came on the screen. Pressed between two special defense force soilders, she looked back at the camera, her face twitching. Under her long messy hair, some dark red substance stuck to her right temple. Shuya could still clearly recall how her twitching face occasionally formed what appeared to be, strangely enough, a smile.”
Noriko Nakagawa - Girls #15
-Noriko is a quiet girl who avoids trouble. She is an A student and very shy, but is picked on at school. She befriends a boy named Nobu and tries her best to keep him out of trouble, but unfortunately (and obviously) he is killed (The first to be killed in the game; Killed by Sakamochi for mouthing off.) Shuya teams up with Noriko because he feels its his duty to protect her because Nobu, Shuya’s late best friend, had a crush on her. Shuya eventually ends up falling in love with her throughout the book.
“Shuya whipped his mouth and staggered up. He released the Uzi and extended only his right hand, hugging Noriko. On impact Noriko’s body sent a jolt of pain through his side, but he didn’t care. They were having there reunion right about some fresh puke, but that didn’t matter either. Her body against him felt warm in the cold rain.” Page 520
Shougo Kawada - Boys #5
Shogo is a new student. He transferred to Shiroiwa Jr. High at the beginning of the year. He is a mysterious kid, who avoids the crowds, and has random scars all over his body. He had to repeat his 3rd year because he participated in the previous years battle royale at his other school, then took the rest of the year off to recover. He tems up with Noriko and Shuya and aids them throughout the game.
“A long scar from what appeared to be a knife wound ran over his left brow, and when they changed in the gym lockers (this was besides the point but Kawada’s body was build like a middleweight boxer’s), Shuya was shocked to find the same kind of scars covering his arms and bacl. There where two round scars next to each other on his left shoulder. They looked like gunshot wouinds, but that was unbelievable.” Page 31
Kazuo Kiriyama - Boys #6
-Kiriyama is the slightly insane student who enjoys participating in battle royal. When Kiriyama was born a shard was lodged into his soft skull and made its way into his brain, killing his sense of emotion. His first kill in the game were the members of the gang he was in. He tricked them into meeting him at the north point, then one by one he would impale them with bullets and retrieve there weapons.
Mitsuko Souma - Girls #11
-Mitsuko is the outcast. She is feared by many and for good reason. She is cold and heartless, and a lot like Kiriyama. Over the years people have beaten her, and hurt her, and slowly taken the life from her. She is an empty shell and all she wants is not to be a loser anymore. All she needs is for somebody to love her. But don’t get me wrong, she does enjoy the game. She is tricky, and beautiful, and knows how to use her beauty to her advantage. She is incredibly intelligent, and swift, and uses her acting skills to get out of very tight situations numerous times. She is one of the last to die, killed by Kiriyama.
‘Megumi Pressedher lips tightly to the stifle a shriek and shook her head. “I-I’m so ahamed of myself. For a moment, I was trying to kill you. I thoughtof killing you. Because I was…I was scared”
Mitsuko’s eyes widened when she heard this—but she didn’t get upset. All she did was slightly nod her face which had been scrunched up from crying hysterically. Then she offered a warm smile. “that’s okay. Really. Don’t get to upset. Its only to be expected. In this awful situation. Really, don’t get upset. Okay? Just stay with me please?”
After Mitsuko said this, she gently held Megumi’s face with her left hand and pressed her left cheek against Megumi’s cheek. Megumi could feel Mitsuko’s tears.
Oh. Megumi thought, I was so wrong about her. It turned out Mitsuko Souma was an incredibly kind girl. She managed to forgive someone who tried to kill her with such a kind response, “its okay.” Didn’t our teacher, Mr. Hayashida, whos already been killed, warn us how wrong it is to judge people just by their reputations?
With these thought, Megumi felt something well up inside here again. She held Mitsuko’s body even more tightly. That was all she could do for now. Im so sorry, im so sorry, im such a horrible person, I am really—
The slashing sound megumi heard sounded like a lemon being cut.
It was a sickle—the kind used to harvest rice. And now its tip was stuck in megumi’s throat…
Mitsuko quickly turned off her flashlight and stood up. She whipped away the annoting tears (which she could produce any time).
Looking down at Megumi’s corpse, she spoke slowly and quietly, “im sorry. I was also trying to kill you.”
Sakamochi
- Sakamochi is the teacher at battle royal. He explains the rules to the class, hands them their day packs, spanks them on the but and sends them on there way, but not without killing a couple class disturbers before the game starts. He also broadcast the deaths and danger zones ever 6 hours to the student. But every once in a while he will get in on the action and end up screwing over a student.
“alright then, listen up. First of all, each and every one of you differ according to your intelligence, physical dexterity, etc., etc. we’re borne unequal, so we will not treat Noriko Nakagwa – over there!! No Whispering!” Sakamochi suddenly yelled. He threw a white object where Fumiyo Fujiyoshi (Female Student No.18) was in the process of whispering something to the female class representative Yukie Utsumi, who was sitting next to her. Shuya wondered whether it was chalk for a moment, but of course that was absurd, given the circumstances.
The object made the thumping sound of a nail being pounded into a coffin. A thin knife was planted in the middle of Fumiyo Fujiyoshi’s wide, fair-skinned forehead.” Page 56-57
