So, you've decided to dye your hair, but you're not quite sure where to start? How do you know what materials you'll need, what kind of dye is best, etcetera? Easy. Just scroll down.
Hair Dye Basic Materials
You will need...

- Old, cruddy clothes. This is important. Bleach and dye do NOT come out of clothing. Please do not dye your hair in your prom dress.
- Old, cruddy towel. I don't think your guardian will be very happy if you use his or her best towels to bleach your hair. Find an old one that no one cares about.
- Bleach That's only if you're going to bleach your hair before you dye it. Check out some different kinds of bleach on the bleach page.
- Dye. There are many different kinds of dye you could get. If you want a short-lived dye, temporary color is for you. Temporary color washes out in one shampoo. For something a little bit more lasting, semi-
permanent will work. Semi-permanent works best over bleached out hair. Demi-permanent lasts a little bit longer then semi, about 8-12 weeks instead of 4-6. Permanent color is just that: permanent. It will fade, but it will never wash completely out of your hair. You can see different brands of dyes in the dye section.
- Tint brush and processing cap. I personally never use the tint brush, but some people like it. The processing cap isn't a necessary part of the plan, but it helps lock in heat from your head and speed the reaction time up Plus, it keeps you from getting dye and/or bleach everywhere.
- Vaseline or Baby Oil. This is necessary to protect your face, ears, and neckline from being dyed as well.
- Gloves. You can use either plastic or latex gloves. Most of the gloves sold in beauty stores for hair-dyeing are polyurethene. IF YOU DO NOT USE GLOVES, YOUR HANDS WILL BE THE COLOR YOU SELECTED.
- Intense Conditioner For when you're finished dyeing your hair. Bleach and permanent dyes will wreck your hair, and the conditioner is ESSENTIAL if you don't want your hair to start breaking off.
- Rubbing alchohol or Astringent This will take the dye off your skin when you are finished. They do make dye removers, but it's not necessary when you can just use astringent from the dollar store.
