Had Mock Ford $180 Brake Special April 29, 2011.
Truck sat in driveway for 2 weeks. I used another car to drive around town.
Monday May 9, 2011
Drove Truck to Wymer from Grants Pass, 20 miles each way, to pick up some hay.
On East Evans Creek in Wymer/ Rogue River area, truck started smoking with strong smell of burnt clutch/ burnt brake. Smoke came from front of truck.
Near Accident #1. During the drive home on Highway 5, my car had a tendency to pull to the left. When I touched the brake bedal, the car pulled to the right.
Near Accident #2. I stopped at a gas station in Rogue River to look at the car again, next to the air pump. While I was parked, a car pulled in behind me. When I went to back up, the only reason we did not have an accident is because the other driver honked their horn.
2 Near Accidents because of one bad brake job from Mock Ford.
When I got home, the left wheel was extremely hot, and making all sorts of creaking sounds like when metal expands and contracts.
Right wheel was just warm.
Not wanting to do more damage to a car with damaged brakes, I had it towed to a local competent mechanic (i.e., not Mock Ford.)

The car was subsequently analyzed by another local mechanic. They said that a caliper with 130,000 miles will sometimes seize up when a new pad is put in. They also indicated that this is common knowledge among competent brake mechanics.
That mechanic then recommended the following -
* Replace both front brake calipers.
* Replace both front brake pads (Remember, I just paid Mock Ford $180 to replace both front brake pads.)
* Re-surface the left front brake rotor if necessary (Remember, I just paid Mock Ford $180 to re-surface the left front brake rotor.)
Total Cost for Brake Repair #2: $500 and change.
Remember, when I took my truck into Mock Ford, the brakes worked fine. The $500 expenditure will return the truck to the same functional state it was in before the Mock Ford $180 "Brake Special."
I had just driven 3x 400 mile road trips, one of them with a loads of about 2000 pounds, another with a load of about 1000 pounds. The truck worked great.
The old brake pads worked fine in the old calipers. But, going by the book, it was time for a routine maintenance.
So, I trusted Mock Ford with my truck. Big Mistake.
The work done by Mock had the following effects:
1. Warped my Brake Rotor, Left Front.
Of course, when you re-surface a rotor, you machine away existing metal. Has Mock Ford's negligence damaged my left front brake rotor enough for me to need an entirely new rotor ?
2. Damaged my Brake Caliper, Left Front.
When I took it to Mock, it worked fine. Although some mechanics know that putting a new rotor in an old caliper is ill-advised, that's what Mock did.
3. Almost caused 2 car accidents.
4. Was Damaging to my health. I got to breathe asbestos smoke for about 1/2 hour while driving home.
Because of an industrial accident when I was younger, I am extremely sensitive to smoke exposure. I breathed through my nose the whole way home to minimize the effect. The smoke affected & inflamed my mouth, throat, & upper lungs Monday night after the drive home from Wymer.
In short, within 20 miles of receiving Mock's $180 "Brake Special", my truck became non-functional & dangerous to drive. The front brakes don't work safely. Additional driving can damage it further.
Before Mock's $180 "Brake Special", my truck was completely functional.
Let us back up to the last time my car was in functional condition - the instant before Mock started their $180 "Break Job."
In order to return my car to the condition it was in then (no warped & burned left front rotor, no non-functional left front brake caliper), I want Mock Ford to do the following -
1. For Starters, Refund the $180 they charged me to break my brakes, via their $180 "Special".
2. Pay for the $500 it will cost to get my brakes back to the functional condition they were in when I first brought my truck to Mock Ford.
3. Compensate me $TBD for having to breathe asbestos brake smoke while driving a car with damaged brakes, and for my trouble.
I have spoken to the Service Manager, Donald Mock. He proposed that I allow Mock Ford to fix my truck.
Given what has happened so far, that sounds un-wise.
At this stage, would YOU trust Mock Ford with your vehicle if you were in my shoes ?
As it turns out, I am not the only person who has discovered Mock Ford's Less-than-Stellar approach to Customer Service.
