BIOGRAPHY:
At the age of 2 3 he was married to Sarah Hilyard at her father's double log
cabin in Fairmount Township. They built a log cabin on 40 acres of ground that
Sarah had enter ed from the government. The furniture in the cabin consisted of
stools and a table made by John. Along with the 40 acres entered by his wife,
John had 80 acres of timberland which he cleared and prepared for plowing.
John became one of the most prosperous landowners in the area, having 1800
acres at the time of his death.
John was a very prominent and influential citizen and his political allegiance
was to the Whig party. He acted as school director and belonged to the
Christian church.
DEATH-HEALTH_HISTORY: Died at the age of 68 years, 0, months, 20 days, from
Pulmonary Consumption and Bright's Disease which he had for 6 years.

from Ohio. This was the 2nd marriage in this town.
CHURCH AFFILIATION: She was a faithful member of the Christian Church.
DEATH: She died after a weeks illness. She was followed to her grave by the
largest numbers of relative and friends of any person buried at Mound Prairie.

BIOGRAPHY:
Christopher Stauffer was in his time one of the wealthiest men and largest land
owners in Adams Co., Illinois. He achieved a success as a farmer and
businessman which made him notable all over Western Illinois. Hi s home the
noted Mound Farm, is now occupied by his daughter and son-in-law. Mr. and Mrs.
S.D. Moore.
He was born in Fayette Co. Pennsylvania, Jan 29, 1821 and came to Adams Co. IL
in 1837.
In 1857 he married Sarah Keach, who was born June 1, 1837. They were married
at Rushville, Schuyler, Illinois.
Christopher located in Beverly, Adams Co. Beverly, and at that time acquired
land which is now included in Mound Farm.
His possessions kept growing and expanding under his remarkable energy and
foresight, and at one time he owned 720 acres in a body. Altogether is owned
1,000 acres. while he made much money by judicious investment in land, most
of his income was derived from lives tock. He was inclined to lavish
hospitality, and delighted to entertain his numerous friends at his home.
While a member of no church, he was one of the most liberal supporters of the
Mound Prairie Christian Church.
Politically he was a republican.
He died at his home.
He and his wife had three children to reach maturity. He is buried in the
Mound Prairie Cemetery in Beverly. He was 85 yrs, 7 months and 19 days old
when he died.
He is in the 1900 Beverly township, Adams, Illinois census, ED 10 0, sheet 4,
line 25, age 79 with wife Sarah age 62.

about her grandparents "Elizabeth and George came to Ill. at an early age with
their parents. They were married 56 years. Popular in their community,
George was a successful farmer and business man . Their outstanding home is
now owned by a family member. Elizabeth's obit describes her as a quiet home
spirit. She became a member of the Christian Church at an early age. They
were instrumental in building the Beverly Christian Church. In the adjoining
cemetery there is a large memorial monument with their and their children's
names and birth dates."

MILITARY:
George Washington was a member of Company D, 50th Illinois Infantry Volunteers
and served during the Civil War. He was wounded during the war when a mini
ball hit him in the neck. He talked really funny after that .
EMIGRATION-LAND:
After the war, George, moved to Benton City, MO and purchased a military tract
of land through the government. This land was sold cheap in payment for
serving in the Civil War.
RESIDENCES:
George and his family lived southeast of Benton City on a farm. They lived in
a large two story house quite fancy for its day. The house had a stairway in
the front of the house and a large stairway in the back of the house.

MILITARY:
Jacob Stauffer fought in the Civil War. He served in the Illinois Infantry and
was a Lieutenant. Along with his brother, George, he sent many letters
home to their younger brothers. Many of the letters survived, in 1990, and
most the them are quite enjoyable to read, some are written in jest and others
are very serious.
RESIDENCES:
After the war, Jake as he was called, moved with his wife and a son to Benton
City, MO where they settled o n what was called a military tract of land that
they bought at a cheap price f or serving in the Civil War.
RESEARCHER: Daughter-in-law, Ruth Ballew, of Sarah "Rhoda" Stauffer furnished many of the details about the Stauffer family.

OBITUARY:
William Henry Stauffer was born near Fishhook, in Pike county, Illinois, 23
January 1847. His parents were John and Sarah Hilyard Stauffer, t he former a
native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Virginia. His father cam e to Illinois
in 1836 and settled in Fairmount Township. He grew to manhood o n the old
Stauffer homestead where he was born.
In 1871 he married Rachel Ellen Woods who was born in 1851 in Pike County. He
owned 80 acres of well-improved land with good buildings. Immediately after
his marriage he moved to a farm near Benton City, Missouri where he resided
until 8 December 1877, when he moved to the old home place east of Baylis. He
raised five children: George E. Jr, Nellie A., Mary J., J. William, and J.
Christopher.
He united with the Church of Christ at Perry under the ministry of A. J. Mc
Laughlin and ha s lived a consistent Christian life since that time. He was a
kind and loving husband and father, his was the ideal home and no place suited
him so well. He was a man strong in his convictions always standing for the
right as he saw it.
He had a hardy laugh, was short of stature, but broad shouldered. He walked
with a high step, lifted his legs high as if marching when he walked. He
enjoyed telling stories of all kinds to his grandchildren to the
dissatisfaction of his wife.
Funeral services for William Henry Stauffer were conducted by A. L. McLaughlin
at the M. E. Church of Baylis, Illinois.
