The FRIENDS of the Watchung Library
Hold Annual Garden Party in the Reading Garden

 

The FRIENDS of the Watchung Public Library held their 2002 Annual Meeting Thursday in the Reading Garden & Bird Sanctuary behind the Library facility located off the Watchung Circle.  “It was a beautiful afternoon and an opportunity to thank all of our wonderful volunteers and supporters,” FRIENDS President Harold Kreis remarked.  The group had refreshments in the Garden and also enjoyed new outdoor furniture donated by Sandy & Greg Kingsbury of Tuttle Road. 

The FRIENDS of the Watchung Public Library sponsors programs & projects supporting the local Library, which is a branch of the Somerset County Library System.  The Borough is currently awaiting a report from SSB Architects to evaluate the possibility of a Library addition, or make recommendations on other options.  “The FRIENDS are committed to advocating an improved facility for our wide range of programming for both adults and children,” Mr. Kreis added. 

Voted as 2002 President is Harold Kreis; Vice President is Colleen Mehegan; Treasurer & Executive Director is Ken Post; Secretary is Shelia Duyckinck, and Board members include Barbara Hart; Norma Koed; Michael Patticchio; Catherine Ilchert and new Board member Barbara Quinn.

This past year the FRIENDS have organized and sponsored such programs as the Creative Writing Workshop; a popular Antiques Appraisal program; The Christopher Ingrassia Memorial at the Watchung Hills Regional High School Library; two women’s health programs with Dr. Debra Bernstein; a newly initiated delivery service to Mt. St. Mary’s Macauley Hall residents; a lively Book Discussion Group; a handwriting analysis workshop; Art Therapy programming; in addition to numerous children’s programs.  “We’re very appreciative of the support of our local business community with our new 10% discount for FRIENDS members at Border’s Books in the new Watchung Square Mall.” added Board member Michael Patticchio, who coordinated the discount program.

Mr. Kreiss added, “These programs are due to the fantastic efforts of our Library Director Doug Poswencyk; our staff, patrons and the support of the many members of the FRIENDS.  Our Watchung Library is a wonderful place that provides a sense of home to Watchung residents and patrons from neighboring communities.”
