GRIT AND VALOR

THE STORY OF A HORSE NAMED SWALE

Swale was a magnificent thoroughbred. He was one of the greatest sons of the legendary and immortal Seattle Slew. At the time of his tragic death, he stood 16.2/5 hands tall, and weighed about 1100 pounds. A towering figure, Swale wore a size six shoe. He had a beautiful black coat, that was augmented by a very handsome face and head. Swale was so tall, he was almost five feet, seven inches in height at the withers. In comparison, he was almost one full hand taller than Seabiscuit was, and slightly taller than the late great Secretariat was. One of Swale's most impressive victories took place at the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York on June 9 1984. This occured just 7 1/2 days before his untimely passing. At this race, Swale endured 100 degree heat and an equally sweltering humidity index, to win the 12 furlong,(1 and 1/2 mile race), by more than four full lengths. His final time of 2:27 1/5 was the fourth fastest Belmont Stakes ever run up to that specific time. What makes it even more amazing, is that his final time still ranks as the ninth fastest (As of 2011). The photo directly above shows Swale storming his way to a dominating triumph in the 1984 Belmont Stakes. As you can clearly see form this beautiful photo, Swale had a marvelous physical presence, and was incredibly well-trained and fit. His jockey was the legendary and incomparable Laffit Pincay Jr. He would retire with a world record 9,530 victories, the most of all time. Pincay's 1984 Kentucky Derby victory would turn out to be very significant, because it would be the only Kentucky Derby triumph of his illustrious and unrivaled career. _________________________________________________________________
