Roxas city started as a municipality of Capiz on the banks of Panay River. In the 1560's, the Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi left Cebu and came to Capiz. After a year in the area, he was to establish friendly relations with the natives and converted many of them into Christians. In December 1899, American forces landed in Panay and took control of the island. During the American regime, several sons and daughters of the town rose to eminence such as Senator Jose Altavas and National Artist Jovita Fuentes. The city's most famous name, however, is Manuel Roxas-First President of the Philippines after the Commonwealth. On April 1, 1951, then President Elpidio Quirino signed into law Republic Act No.603 renaming the Municipality of Capiz into Roxas City in honor of Manuel Roxas. |
