ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTEENTH REGIMENT OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY

This regiment, eight companies strong, was sent to Cincinnati in September, 1862, as that city was then threatened by Kirby Smith. The ninth company was here formed, and the regiment mustered into the service. Late in September it moved, under Gen. A.J. Smith, toward Lexington, but at Cynthiana was detached to guard the railroad. Patrol and guard duty was performed, and rebel recruiting largely prevented. On August 1, 1863, it went, by Lexington and Louisville, to Lebanon, Ky., and on the 20th set out on a march for East Tennessee. On November 10th, Kingston was reached, and a few days later the rebels cut the communication between that point and Knoxville. Picket duty became arduous, to prevent a surprise from Wheeler's cavalry. The victories at Knoxville and Chattanooga relieved the Kingston garrison, and on December 9th, the regiment reached Nashville, and from there went to Blain's Cross Roads, and finally to Mossy Creek, to support Elliott's cavalry. On the 29th, the rebel cavalry under Martin and Armstrong assulted General Elliott, at Paultier's creek, when he fell back to Mossy creek. As the cavalry approached, the regiment took position in the edge of a piece of woods, when the rebel force moved directly upon them. When the enemy approached within a hundred yards, the regiment opened a rapid fire, which was kept up about two hours, when it charged the rebels, and drove them over the crest of a hill. In this action the rebels lost about forty, killed and wounded. It was disposed with great skill, by Lieutenant-Colonel Young, and commanded by General Elliott. While in East Tennessee, the regiment suffered great privations, and subsisted about six months on half and quarter rations. They had neither sugar nor coffee for four months. Clothing was also short, but with all this the troops never murmured, but were even cheerful. The regiment was then kept changing about until the campaign of 1864. One march of one hundred miles, to Charleston, was made in five days. May 4th, the regiment emcamped on state line. here all baggage was sent to the rear. On the 7th, the regiment moved upon Dalton, and again advanced upon Resaca. On the afternoon of the 14th , it participated in a charge on the enemy's works, and lost one hundred and sixteen men, in less than ten minutes, out of three hundred actually engaged. On the 15th the engagement was renewed, but that night Johnston retired to Cassville, which in turn he abandoned, on approach of the national forces. After a few days' rest, the regiment went into the desperate battles of Dallas and Pumpkin-Vine creek, and bore a gallant and honorable part. It was afterwards engaged at Kenesaw mountain, at the Chattahoochie, at Utoy creek, and in the final movements about Atlanta. In this operation, about seventy-five men were lost, During one hundred and twenty-one consecutive days, the regiment was within hearing of hostile firing every day except one. During sixty consecutive days it was under fire sixty different times, and during one week there was not a period of five minutes during which the whistling of a ball or the scream of a shell could not be heard. After the fall of Atlanta the regiment fell back to Decatur, where, after a short rest, it joined in the pursuit of Hood, as far as Gaylesville, Ala. On the 23th of November it went to Johnsonville, Tenn., and then to Columbia, to join the army confronting Hood, finally reaching Franklin on the 30th. The brigade was drawn up in single line, its right resting on the Williamsburg pike, and its left at the Locust grove, this regiment being second from the right. The enemy struck the line to the left of the regiment. The shock was terrific, but the line stood firm, and poured a terrific fire into the rebel column. The troops fought desperately, the men using bayonets, and the officers side-arms, over the very breastworks. By daylight the One Hundred and Eighteenth were across the river, and falling on Nashville, where it was again engaged. After the battle of Nashville, it participated in the pursuit of the rebels as far as Columbia, and then went to Clifton. From there it proceeded to North Carolina on January 16, 1865. On February 11th, it embarked on a steamer at Alexandria, landed at Smithville, at the mount of Cape Fear river, moved immediately on Fort Anderson, captured it, and the One Hundred and Eighteenth regiment was the first to plant its colors on the walls. On February 20th, it engaged in a sharp action at Town creek, in which three hundred horsemen and two pieces of artillery were captured and then, entered Wilmington on the 22nd. On the 6th of March it moved to Kingston, then to Goldsboro, and joining Sherman's army on the 23rd of March. It then camped at Mosley Hall until April 9th, when it participated in the final operations against Johnston. It then camped near Raleigh until May 3rd, when it move to Greensboro, and then to Salisbury, where it remained until June 24th, when it was mustered out of the service. The regiment arrived at Cleveland, O., July 2, was welcomed by Chief Justice Chase, participated in a 4th of July celebration, and was finally discharged on the 9th of July, 1865, having first gone into camp at Lima, O., in August, 1862.

John Siegel, one of the representative men of McLean Township, president of the Sherman special school district board of education, is a successful general farmer and resides in section 10, where he owns 128 acres of valuable land. He was born in Cynthian township, Shelby County, June 21, 1867.

Mr. Siegel secured his education in the schools of his native township and in the Sherman school district, after which he learned practical farming and has made farming in all its branches, his business. Since his marriage he has lived on his present farm, which he purchased of the Sherman estate, and many of the improvements have been placed here since taking possession. The farmhouse was in good repair but Mr. Siegel found it necessary to build a new barn and other structures. He has cleared about 100 acres and has drained the same and put down tiling, the other twenty-eight acres being yet in valuable timber. His property is favorably situated as he has a market at Fort Loramie, which is only three miles west and the Sherman turnpike road gives him transportation facilities.

Sr. Siegel married Miss Mary Barhorst, a daughter of Henry Barhorst of McLean township, and all their seven children were born on this farm, namely: Elizabeth, Caroline, Frank, Henry, Raymond, Josephine and Rhinehart. The family belongs to St. Michael's Catholic church. In politics a strong democrat, Mr. Siegel has frequently been elected on his party ticket to important township offices and for four terms was turnpike superintendent and for about five years has been president of the school board. Generation No. 6

32. Carl Anton Barhorst, born November 02, 1804 in Harpendorf, Oldenburg, Germany; died December 28, 1852 in Fort Loramie, Shelby, Ohio. He was the son of 64. Tobias Barhorst and 65. Maria Elizabeth Wehebring. He married 33. Maria Elizabeth Freking November 27, 1827 in Steinfeld, Oldenburg, Germany.

33. Maria Elizabeth Freking, born October 11, 1800 in Ostehaus, Germany; died September 01, 1881 in Ft. Loramie, Shelby, OH, USA. She was the daughter of 66. Johann Heinrich Freking and 67. Maria Catherina ROHE.

Notes for Carl Anton Barhorst:

Carl Anton Barhorst (genannt Wiewerig)- Maria Elisabeth Freking

Baptismal information from Jim Scharf

Sponsors were Carl Joseph Schinder and Margaretha Keller.

Marriage information from Steinfeld church (LDS # 0909931)

Carl Anton Barhorst (genannt Wiewerig) son of Tobias Barhorst (gennant Wiewerig) and Maria Elisabeth Wehebring.

Maria Elisabeth Freking daughter of Heinrich Freking and Maria Catherina Rohe

Witnesses at wedding were Clemens Barhorst and Herman Anton Rohe.

Carl Anton married Maria Elisabeth Freking on November 27, 1827 at Steinfeld.

His father Tobias was already deceased and known to be a soldier. Like his brother Johann Heinrich, married earlier, he carried genannt Wiewerig behind his name indicating they lived on the Wiewerig estate at Harpendorf.

All of their children were born before they emigrated with Clemens in 1846.

Their children:

1 Johann Heinrich 1828 Married Elisabeth Grieshop

2. Maria Elisabeth 1831

3. Maria Catharina 1833 Married a Gudenkauf; Maria Agnes' twin

4. Maria Agnes 1833 Married Herman Henry Bramlage

5. Bernadina 1836

6. Carl Joseph 1841 Married a Strucamp

7. Female Infant 1844 Stillborn

In July of 1846, Carl Anton and his family sailed from Bremen, Germany on the 'Caspar Thor', a ship carrying 182 passengers. They crossed the Atlantic in about a month, very good time, and landed on August 5 at Baltimore, Maryland. The passenger list showed Carl 'Burghorst(30), Elisabeth (42), Clemens (46), Elisabeth (16), Agnes (15), Catherine (12), Bernhard(12), and Joseph(5). The person making up the roster obviously guessed at the ages. Clemens was Carl's brother. There were 9 listed on the passenger list, which would be the correct count for the family and Clemens. Incorrect names are not unusual. They all listed Cincinnati as their destination. They probably traveled overland by way of Wheeling and by boat on the Ohio River. At Cincinnati, they would have traveled the Miami-Erie Canal to Minster. Johann Heinrich Barhorst undoubtedly influenced them to come to Ohio, and helped them in their first years.

Wehebring (Wehebrinck) - Middendorf The Wehebring (ck) family lived on the Wiewerig farm at Harpendorf, according to various Damme death records and Steinfeld marriage records. The Wiewerig name associated with the farm evidently passed on to the Wehebrings at some point not discovered. It is also obvious that the farm ownership passed to the eldest, regardless of sex.

Johann Arnold Wehebring (also spelled Wehebrinck) married Anna Margaretha Middendorf on 17 October 1768, and their marriage produced six children, the eldest of which was Maria Elisabeth, who married Tobias Barhorst in 1789.

The children:

1. Maria Elisabeth 1769 Marries Tobias Barhorst

2. Johann Heinrich 1773

3. Johann Arnold 1775

4. Anna Margaretha 1777

5. Johann Bernard 1779

6. Caspar Heinrich 1781

Carl purchased one piece of land from the "government" on 27 November 1848. It consisted of 46.05 acres located at the southwest corner of Schlater and Hilgefort Road. He also owned 56 acres on the northwest corner of Schlater and Hilgefort Road, the date of acquition is unknown. He sold the 46 acre plot to his son Johan Heinrich on 12 aug 1851 for $115.00 and the 56 acre plot to Johan Heinrich 0n 2 November 1852 for $800.00. The property may have been sold to Johan Heinrich because of ill health, since Carl died on 28 December 1852.

Barhorst Ancestors of Theresa Marie (Bertke) Wenzke

Maria Agnes Barhorst, daughter of Carl Anton and Maria Elisabeth Freking Barhorst, was born in Germany in 1833. The baptism was recorded at the Steinfeld church. She emigrated to America and Fort Loramie, Ohio, with her family in 1846. Her father's brothers, Johann Heinrich and Bernard Barhorst, evidently came earlier to Minster in 1832. Maria Agnes married Herman Henry Bramlage as his second wife on January 15, 1851, at St. Augustine Church, Minster, Ohio. Their marriage was witnessed by Rev. Kunkler. Mary Agnes died in August 1861, some time after her third child Maria Elisabeth's birth in 1860. We do not know if her death was related to this child's birth. All her children were girls - the second, Maria Bernadina, became the wife of Bernard Bertke, my great-grandfather. (From Jim Scharf)

Burial: Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Seneca, KS

Notes for Clemens Heinrich Gudenkauf:

The Gudenkauf's farmed in the Fort Loramie area for a number of years and moved to Kansas in the late 1880's. Some of the Gudnekaufs have maintained contact with the Ohio Barhorsts to the present day.

On Clemen's farm there was located the schoolhouse for McLean Township School District #1, more familiarly known as Dirksen School. In 1881, Clemens sold a small tract of land to the school board to increase the size of the school lot.

Tragedy struck the Gudenkaup Family when two daughters, Maria Carolina and Bernadina, succumbed to typhoid fever in October 1882. This same year, Clemens sold his farmland to Franz Lange and Anton Bernard Dirksen. Clemens then bought Lot 81 in Berlin or Fort Loramie in January 1883. In Berlin he went into partnership with Joseph Ratermann in operation of a flourmill located at 42 East Park Street. This mill was equipped with the most mofern of machinery capable of milling the finest flour then available. Customers came from throughout western Ohio and even from Indiana. This enterprise was short-lived, as the mill was set afire and destroyed in December 1883 by an arsonist. The fire was another disaster that struck the family, as no insurance had yet been taken out on the business. Clemens sold his house and lot to Henry Barhorst in September 1884. The Gudenkauf Family in March 1888 settled in Seneca, Nemaha County, Kansas. Clemens died at Seneca on 16 April 1903 and Catherine died there 26 May 1900. Both found resting places in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Seneca, Kansas.

Tobias Barhorst - Maria Elisabeth Wehebrink (Wehebring) marriage witnesses were: Carl Westendorf and Johan Bernd Mahler.

Records for this family are found at three churches - the first son, Tobias, at Damme, the next two - Johann Arnold and Johann Heinrich - at Holdorf, and the remaining ones at Steinfeld. The family lived the entire time at one farm - the Wiewerig farm in Harpendorf- as the latter church records indicate that Tobias was required to take on the Wiewerig farm name (genannt Wiewerig) where the Wehebrings lived. Tobias's half-brother, Johann Heinrich Barhorst, inherited the Barhorst Farm. Tobias and Maria Elisabeth were married February 11, 1789, and the wedding was recorded at the Damme church. They had 13 children:

The first two male children seem to be named after their grandparents - the first after the paternal grandfather, the second after the maternal grandfather. The father Tobias was evidently a soldier at some point in his life.

513. Geseke Catharina Neitfeld, born 1640; died 1708.

Notes for Johann zum Borgerding:

BorgerdingS

I interrupt the Barhorst story because Anna Catharina Burwinckel, now a widow, remarried to Tobias Borgerding who took the Barhorst Farm name. These are the origins of the Borgerding family. Land and people inventories similar to the Barhorsts occurred for the Borgerding generations. They also lived at the Ihorst community since at least 1535 (see map):

1535 Arendt von Borgerdingk

1545 Arendt Borgdinck

1625 Johann zum Borcherding

1661 Johann zum Borgding

1700 Borgerdingk

1789 Borgerding 38 hectares (94 acres)

Johann zum Borgerding - Geseke Nietfeld

The first complete Borgerding family found is Johann zum Borgerding, who married Geseke Nietfeld. His father is also Johann zum Borgerding, matching with the person and land inventory. So this family lived on the Borgerding Farm as Colons - owners of a large farm. They had seven children:

1. Caspar Heinrich 1662 Died 1708

2. Petronella Catharina 1663

3. Arendt Wilhelm 1665

4. Geseke 1667

5. Lucke 1669

6. Berndt 1671 Of whom further

7. Johann 1676

Johann zum Borgerding died in 1707; Geseke the following year 1708. The farm was not inherited by Berndt. Caspar Heinrich died the same year as his mother, but could have already been the Colon.. Arendt could likewise if Caspar Heinrich did not.

Berndt Borgerding - Anna Margaretha Rosener

Berndt married Anna Margaretha Rosener on October 22, 1700, and became a Kotter (small farmer) on the Borgerding Farm. This means he owned a house and small plot of ground for a garden, but the Borgerding Farm was in his sibling's ownership. The marriage took place at Damme St. John the Baptist church. Berndt (Bernard) and Anna Margaretha had eight children:
