The Iare people live at Maipenairu, Mapaio, Kapai and other villages on the central branches of the Purari River in the Delta region of the Gulf Province. Their language, also known as I'ai, is one of the Purari language family, formerly called Namau, and related to Kaimare, Maipu'a, and Koriki.
In October 2005 I held a writers' workshop for Iare language speakers at Maipenairu. They produced a set of hand-written stories with English translations. The intention is to produce readers at various levels for use in schools and homes from these stories. I am at present typing in and editing the handwritten stories, and compiling a dictionary from the words in them.
