Duke of Rothesay

The title Duke of Rothesay is the official title possessed by the Heir Apparent to the throne of Scotland. Since the Act of Union 1707, that merged the Kingdoms of Scotland and England, a separate Scottish throne has not existed. The merger was formed into the Kingdom of Great Britain. Later the Kingdom of Ireland was merged in to form the United Kingdom. Thus making the title held by the heir to the throne of the United Kingdom. The Duke of Rothesay is the title used by the heir apparent when in Scotland. The dukedom was first created in 1398. David Stewart, the son of Robert III, King of Scots, was the first Duke of Rothesay. When he died his death, his brother James, later King James I, received the dukedom. In 1469 an Act of the Scottish Parliament was passed that confirmed the dukedom was to always be given to the heir-apparent of the Scottish Crown.
