NEW FOLK SONG

SONGWRITING COMPETITION

 

For an original song, traditional or contemporary style

A. Adults and over 16 years

Entry fee class A - £3.50

Class B - £2.50

RULES

 

1.   Songs should be submitted on cassette tape or CD accompanied by a lyric sheet, typed or clearly handwritten.

2.   Entries should be new, original work and not have won a prize in another competition or be entered into another competition during the judging period.

3.   Entry is open to all, including professional musicians/songwriters.

4.   Folk songs can be written in contemporary or traditional style and with any theme/subject and will not be returned.

      You must keep a copy in case of loss or damage.

5.   Musical arrangements can be simple or the song can be sung unaccompanied.  The production quality of the finished recording will not be judged, but lyrics must be clearly heard.

6.   In the case of class or group entries from schools, the name of the school and class or name of group can be given. School entries should give a contact for holiday periods.

7.   The cassette, cassette case and lyric sheet should be clearly labelled (with name, address and telephone number and class A or B) in case they become separated.

8.   The judging panel will be taken from the music community.  The panel’s decision will be final.

9.            Organisers responsible for handling entries and the judging panel will not be permitted to enter. 

10. Plymouth Folk Festival reserves the right to use the winning songs for publicity purposes, if required.

11.  Winners will be contacted prior to the festival and may be asked to take part in publicity, including press photographs, to promote the festival.  The winning songwriters may be asked to perform their songs live, but this cannot be guaranteed.

12.  Entry fees must be paid by cheque, made payable to Plymouth Maritime Music Festival. If a results sheet is required, entries must be accompanied by a stamped self-addressed envelope.

13. Entries must arrive by midnight on March 1 2003 or be                              postmarked with that date.

14. Entrants who have not been contacted by May 1 2003 are               free to enter their song elsewhere.

 

 

 

 

COPYRIGHT

 

The copyright of all songs remains with the songwriter.  In the case of collaborative work, all lyricists/composers must give their consent to the song's inclusion in the competition. Copyright in songs exists from the time they are written, but in cases of authorship dispute you may need to prove when this was. It is your responsibility to protect your copyright. Information on securing copyright can be found at  libraries or in the Musicians’ Union leaflet, Gigs, Contracts, Royalties, Copyright. A popular song can be very valuable. Don't lose yours!
