William Duffey's army records state:

William’s papers were in WO 97/1225/143. His papers show that he was born in Clonmel, Tipperary, and that he was aged 9 when he enlisted as a Drummer on 1st January 1809. He was then promoted to Gunner and Drive on 1st November 1817. His service from Full Age begins from 1st January 1818. He was then promoted to Bombardier on 1st August 1829 and to Corporal on 1st April 1833. His final rank was that of Sergeant, to which he was appointed on 1st July 1834. His attestation papers show him attesting on 1st January 1831 at the age of 31, this would effectively be his 2nd period of attestation following completion of his first period of service for which there are no separate attestation papers as he was under age.

William’s army career was spent At Home apart from the period of 18th May 1822 to 29th December 1830, which was spent at the Cape of Good Hope. He was discharged to pension on 14th April 1841, as a result of chronic rheumatism. William’s character was classed as Exemplary. His name had been put in the Good Conduct Book twice, and he had never appeared in the Regimental Defaulters’ Book. Upon discharge William was 5 feet 7 inches tall with brown hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion. (Brenda Masters)

After his army discharge William became a prison warder on the Isle of Wight.

Wm. Duffey married Rebecca Trew on 15 September 1838 at the Parish Church St Paul's, Deptford. He states he is a widower and occupation is Sergeant. Residence was The Broadway for both of them. Wm Duffey states fathers name is Wm. Duffey and his father's profession is Corporal. Witnesses were John & Elizabeth Greig and Les Mack. It is interesting to note that on Wm Duffey's death certificate John Greig is present at the death at Northwood.

Jane UPCOTT [Parents] was born about 1807 in England. She died on 22 Feb 1837 in London, England and was buried in Charlton Churchyard, London. Jane UPCOTT married William DUFFEY on 2 Sep 1824 in St George's, Grahamstown, South Africa.
