The Reconstructors
Reconstructors is an interactive online game
(Shockwave required) that has students work as scientists, historians,
geographers, and detectives. Right now, there
are three episodes with the fourth on its way. Each episode helps students
understand more about drugs and enables them
to make more informed choices when it comes to avoiding drugs of abuse.

Kids Food CyberClub
Kids today want cheeseburgers and soda, not milk
and tossed salad. It is harder than ever to get them to eat right.
That's why the Connecticut Association for Human
Services and Kaiser Permanente developed this wonderful Web
site, designed to teach 3rd to 5th graders about
food and nutrition. The site is divided into sections, including "Food
Keeps Us Well," "Rate Your Plate," and "Food Facts."
Each features an interactive quiz with feedback to test and
reinforce learning. Highlights of the site
include "The Club Cookbook" where visitors are invited to send in their
favorite
recipes and "Books We Love to Read."
Which
disease is most deserving of our research dollars?
Designed for 7th grade students, this Online
Student Research Project puts the learner in a problem-solving role. "Our
Washington legislature has set aside $5,000,000
for research to find cures for three of the most deadly diseases affecting
mankind. It is your job as an appointed committee
to prioritize the funding for the research of the following diseases: AIDS,
Heart Disease, Cancer." This activity makes
use of the Internet and "pay-for-service" information (EBSCO and Electric

The Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention designed
this tool for adults over the age of forty to assesses their risk of
cancer. Individuals are asked questions about
diet, personal history, environment, and family history. The results can
be a
little shocking, but clarify the factors (those
supported by current medical research) that contribute to cancer. Classroom
teachers can use this tool to demonstrate
to students the lifestyle decisions that impact the future. Adults can
assess their
risk of breast cancer, colon cancer, lung
cancer and prostate cancer and find out ways to reduce these risks.

HomeworkSpot is a good place for students
to start homework that requires online resources. Resources are grouped
by
grade level (elementary, middle school, and
high school) and by theme (the Human Body or Space or Dinosaurs). The
reference section contains current events,
libraries, museums, and a reference desk. The extracurricular areas for
middle
and high school students offer links for band,
chess, and debate.
The
Real Scoop on Tobacco
Students can become experts about tobacco
use and issues surrounding its use after completing this WebQuest activity.
In
the process of helping a fictitious peer quit
smoking, students create an ad or poster to visually convey their message,
write a
letter to a tobacco company and an editorial for
the local paper, and create a memorable message using a music video, skit,
or TV commercial.
