I don't have the info you requested, but just received extensive info re Benjamin Waldrop's & Ailsey's lives. I am descendant by their son Ezekiel (wife Rebecca Clements) and their son Newton James Waldrop. Newton (w Nancy McFarland) had a son Harvey Manning Waldrop, who was my grandfather (and a meaner man there never was, I hear). I don't think I ever met him, but I visited his wife Georgia Cantwell Waldrop many times as a child, well after she had left Harvey and divorced him. What info do you have, and where do you fit into Ben's and Ailsey's tree? ###########################################

This is a conversation on Genforum http://genforum.genealogy.com/waldrop/messages/932.html Looks like a good place for you to try Sandra.

Norma: I have this family for Ezekiel Rufus Waldrop: wife: Rebecca Clements Children: Benjamin W; Greenberry; Manning [Mannion?]; Elizabeth Caroline; John F; Newton J; Mary M; Sarah; Ezekiel Anders; William Silas; America Francis; James; Sidney. I have his father as Benjamin Waldrop, son of "John, sr" of Amelia Co, VA Regards, Howard Waldrop

Howard, thanks for your reply. Yes, I did get info about my Harvey from Jan Dawson. He was Newton James' son. Rebecca had a brother (as I recall) named Manning, who was a Baptist minister, and I'm thinking that Harvey Manning was named after him. I don't know where the Harvey comes from yet. The Graves family has a site which includes Ezekiel, because Fannie Graves is an ancestor of Rebecca (her mother?), and it is most interesting. Rebecca (through Elizabeth Graves) descends from Capt. Thomas Graves, who was at Jamestown. I haven't been able to get any more on John Waldrop, Sr. Would certainly like to. It doesn't look like anyone has much info on him. Thanks again.

Norma, My ggg-grandfather was GreenBerry Waldrop, brother of your Ezekial Rufus Waldrop. Your mention of the Graves name interests me. One of GreenBerry's granddaughters was named Texana Graves Waldrop. What is the connection between the Graves and Waldrop families? Thanks, Ann

Hello,

I am also a decendant of the Waldrop clan through Greenberry. Your John Waldrop Sr was born abt 1724 VA and died 1807 in Rutherford Co, NC He married Ann ? abt 1750 Amelia Co, VA He was the son of Michael Waldrop and Sarah Mosely. Michael was born 1680 Amelia Co VA and died 1775 Spartanburg Co, SC He was bor to Michael Waldrop who was abt 1645 Scotland and he was born to William Waldrop who was born abt 1638 Scotland. Would love to share info. Thanks Mary

Margaret, you are the only person to tell me that John was son of Michael. Everyone else seems to think that John just appeared...and they have no idea who his parents were. If you are sure of this, where did you get the connection? Please feel free to email me. I have found other descendants of Green Berry and Newton James.

"john, sr" Waldrop appeared as an adult on the Amelia Co, VA tithe list. About 1754, he and James Waldrop [d 1772, Pittsylvania VA], removed to Halifax/Pittsylvania VA.

James died there in 1772. Th whereabouts of "John, sr" after that are, to be frank, problematical. Howard Waldrop

Hmmmm... Is this info in any book? Does anyone know where John, Sr. came from? My Harvey was a recluse and a misanthrope (Grandma left and divorced him), and his son (my father) not much better. Maybe that goes way back in that line of Waldrops. From which Waldrop are you descended?

Norma: No, there is no Waldrop lineage book that I know of. I don't know where John came from. He appeared as an adult in the Amelia C0 VA records about 1750. I don't know his parents or siblings. Howard Waldrop

Actually, there are two books and you can find them in the FHC library at www.familysearch.org. DESCENDANTS OF LUKE WALDROP, 1710-1779 and WAGONS AND WIT (about Texas Waldrops), both by H.L.Waldrop (Howard), and several others that include Waldrops in them. I have communicated with H.L. and he did have Harvey Manning in his database. I have not yet seen the books. I guess others have tried to find more on the ancestors of John, Sr. and been unsuccessful. Did he fight in the Revolution?

As far as I know, "John, sr" did not take up arms. "John, jr" [1753 to 1833, RW pensioner], James, Joseph his sons did. I am aware of several men [at least 5] who are called his sons: John, James, Joseph, Benjamin [your man], Ila, Ezekiel, and Isiah. Daughters are unknown. There may not be records of all the sons taking up arms, but they did rally to the patriot cause. I know HL, he is a good man. The parents of "John, sr" are not known. Personally, I think that he had a brother: James, d 1772, Pittssylvania Co VA. I have sent a large amount of data to 3 GS libraries.

If I know your e mail address, I can e mail you my Waldrop file of 7421 names. Regards, Howard H Waldrop. E mail address: HwrdWl@aol.com

Howard, I thought you'd never ask. My email address (which I thought was available to you online at genforum) is norma888@earthlink.net. You've still not disclosed where you fit in to the Waldrop lines, and which one. I have Legacy software, but not Family Tree Maker yet. Will be getting a larger hard drive during the holiday sales. Once I get my little corner of the world into that, I'll update anyone interested.

I got most of my information from Jan Dawson, then began to find other cousins online. I have a cousin in AL who is descended from an aunt of my Harvey Manning. I didn't know anything about Grampa when I started. Will be happy to share. Which of Ezekiel's children is your husband's mother/father? I also have a good friend here who is descended from a family that married into my Waldrops. She grew up where my father was born so I learned a lot from her. You can email me at norma888@earthlink.net.

I, Sandra Waldrop Doolittle found this information in a COBALT BLUE BOOK 1832-1932 DEATHS IN COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, MUSCOGEE COUNTY. BRADLEY LIBRARY, BRADLEY DRIVE OFF WYNNTON ROAD.

I was sitting there just by chance after almost ten years of researching for Joseph Ryan Waldrop and decided to look thu this book just to see if the Waldrop name was listed. I opened it to the index and there was the Hon. J. R. Waldrop. It was information how I could go to the Columbus Ledger Enquirer and look up his obit, how and where he died. I was working with Jan (Janice Leigh Doolittle Page) on her web site when the book caught my eye. I would have never thought to look in Columbus, Georgia, Muscogee County for my Joseph Ryan Waldrop's death. But I was drawned towards the book and sure enough there was everything I was looking for. Just what daddy (Harry Pou Waldrop 1906-1962) had talked about his grandpapa being shot and killed , in Escatawpa, Alabama, Washington County.

TAKEN FROM "THE HISTORY OF WASHINGTON COUNTY." BOOK. (ALABAMA) WRITTEN BY JACQUELINE ANDERSON MATTE.

Sandra Waldrop Doolittle and Juanita Waldrop Stone Hirsch's gr grandpapa.

The day my great grandpapa allegedly assaulted McCartney. the Judge of Probate in Washington County, Alabama, while still wearing his white sheet and hood.

Macartney was given thirty days to make bond and was to appear again on December 30, 1868 before Judge Elliot. He failed to appear and the office of Judge of Probate was declared vacant.

Macarthney wrote again to Secretary of State, C, A, Miller, on January 16,1869 explaning.

I wish to inform you-- returning from Mobile last Sunday 10th Inst. I was waylaid by a party of Ku klux Rebels, at Escatawpa, who followed me about a mile from the depot and, one of them named Waldrop, assaulted me and drew his pistol, and put it to my breast and swore he would shoot me, and would have done so had it not been Mr. Moss prevented him, he then twisted my walking stick out of my hand and broke it over my head, and cut me badly and disfigured my face, so as I have not been able to do any thing.

J. W, Gordy was appointed Judge of Probate with the support of John Elliott and a petition with 38 signatures of whites and 31 signatures of freedmens.

C.C. Page had been elected representative to the Genersl Assembly in 1868, but did not get to serve in the capacity. Hon. C.C. Page was murdered and robbed on the road hom on December 23, 1869

Two reports were sumitted telling of Page's death and his replacement Joseph R. Waldrop, Reoresentiveto the State Legislature who received 379 votes having not opposition. R, L Bowling, Sheriff, signed one and J. W, Gordy, Judge of Probate and Clerk of the Circuit Court and Bowling signed the other. Local citizens were again in control of government in Washington County.

Notes: 273 Returns of votes, Washington County. This must have been the same Waldrop who allegedly assaulted McCartney.

UPDATE: Hon Joseph R. Waldrop was ambushed shot and killed August 13, 1870 In Escatawpa , Alabama, Washington County.. It was ruled a radical murder and never solved.

VICTORIA K. THOMAS DIVORCED JOSEPH RYAN WALDROP

Divorced: 1860 in Matagorda Co., TX,,, Note: Clayton Library in Houston. The book is called Matagorda Gazette 1858-1860, by Brown.

Victoria K. Waldrop vs Joseph Waldrop In District Court, Matagorda County, Texas Suit No. 1116, for Divorce.

She alleges in her petition, among , other charges, that she and the said Joseph entered into the bonds of matrimoney...on the 8th day of August, 1855 in the County of Calhoun, State of Texas; ...were residing in Grand Lake, Arkansas, to which place she had been carried by said husband, and that he then and there abandoned her and her infant child among strangers; .....has never returned to her or written or sent word to her....obliged to depend on charity for the means to return to her kindred in Texas... She also alledges that said Joseph is a traveling imposter, and that previous to his marriage with petitioner, he has been married to other women, and that one of his wives was then living, to-wit: Sarah Alexander, of Crittenden county, Arkansas, and that said marriage has not been dissolved, which facts were not known to petitioner until after her marriage." Then it goes on to say that Joseph is not a resident of the State of Texas and that there should be a posting in the newspaper for four consecutive weeks calling him to make an appearance in District Court in April. It is signed by D. E. E. Braman, Clerk, D.C.M.C. and issued 3 Jan 1860. Then, it shows received by Sheriff Jos. Theall and ordered published the same day.

JOSEPH RYAN WALDROP'S LINE

My Family Heritage Dr. Joseph Ryan Waldrop born in Georgia/Mississippi, in 1826. was living with his parents Rev, Green Berry and Elizabeth Ward Waldrop in Haris County , Georgia.

It's looking more and more like Joseph Ryan Waldrop might have been born in Georgia. His papa Rev. Green Berry Waldrop was in Harris and Muscogee from 1827-1840 and before that he was in Gwennette County from 1822 -1927. In the early 1820 Joseph's papa was living in Green County, Alabama

WHERE DID THE NAME JOSEPH RYAN COME FROM?

Rev. Green Berry Waldrop was born in Lauren District, South Caroina, April 29, 1794, made his public profession of religion in 1821, and was Baptized by Rev.Joseph Ryan into the fellowship of the Church called "Five Miles", Green County , Alabama.

Rev Waldrop and Rev. Ryan ministered together in Green County, Alabama, before Rev. Waldrop went back to Georgia, around 1825.

Could be, Green Berry and his wife Elizabeth Ward Waldrop named their son Joseph Ryan Waldrop after their close friend , Rev Joseph Ryan.

Hello Sandra

I have tried to discern the info you posted on your site about your ggf. I am only more baffled by your use of the term scalawag. Let me try to explain from my perspective. I do have much Mississippi kin and we seem to have some common lines together.

Scalawag is the term for a Southern traitor. I just do not understand how a Southerner can wear it as a badge of honour. Let me qualify myself with a bit of history. During the War in Eastern central Mississippi union General Sherman burned homes, churches and businesses. He stole all livestock, food, crops and anything of value. He raped women both slave and free. He poisoned the crop lands and poisoned the wells. Side bar: (One of our Doolittle ancestors, Elizabeth Doolittle in Newton, Mississippi made her home into a hospital where she cared for wounded Confederate soldiers. As the died with no place to be buried she had 100 of them buried in the Doolittle family cemetery in Newton, Newton County, Mississippi. )

Now it is 1865 the war should be over but reconstruction was instituted. Soldiers coming home from war had no guns, no food, torn families, no money, no clothes only to find what homes and lands were left was confiscated by carpetbaggers and scalawags. Southerners were not allowed to vote or run for office. Ex-slaves were appointed to elected government offices and law enforcement positions. They were given guns and ordered to shoot anyone still in a Confederate uniform and to shoot any Southern white person seen out after 10 o'clock at night. Thus the kkk was born. The kkk was the only way Southern white males could stay alive and provide for their families. They went after carpet baggers. They went after scalawags. They went after those exslaves who side with the traitors and northerners. In some places the fighting was so bad is was as if the War had not ended. Sidebar:(Kemper County Mississippi was so bad the called it bloody Kemper). Another thing these past Confederates did was to seize control of the Democrat party and chase out the socialistic Republicans. The tactics these past Confederates used to have the Democrat party as the only party were revolting. These tactics were so ingrained in the Democrat party they still exist today despite the party platform change to communism. As for being divorce four times If you lived in hell for years it would be difficult for you to have a lasting meaningful relationship. What is wrong with dueling? It not like he was going to get satisfaction through a corrupt judge. The carpetbagger/scalawag judge got what he deserved. Your ggf Joseph Ryan Waldrop was an honourable man you should treat him as such.

Harold Unreconstructed in Georgia HERE IS MY ANSWER TO HAROLD . Hi Harold, As hard as it may sound, I use my handle with loving affection, not the meaning of it but the loving meaning behind it, My ancestors were all Southern being from Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. In my grandparents and great grandparent's days, the worst thing you could call anyone was a *Scalawag*. Here how the storie goes. Every year since I was a small child until I was twenty, my parents would take me to Alabama and Mississippi to vist on a two week vacation wiht my dad's relatives. Each trip the first two weeks in June we would first swing over to Pensacola, Flordia to visit my gr aunt Fannie Masters, Barrett Sweeting. Aunt Fannie must have been in her late seventies or early eighties. She was hard of hearing and she didn't want to miss anything my parents were talking about. My parents would always take a girl friend of mine along, my sisters were older than I and were married when I was about twelve years old. Mama and daddy would take one of my friends to keep me from talking and asking so many questions, like " Are we there yet?" and "When are we going to stop and eat?" Back to story. We used to sit on the front porch and while Aunt Fannie was doing all she could to hear, we were sitting on the steps, giggling and talking, not thinking we were bothering Aunt Fannie. When we had gotten on her nerves, she would yell down at us, "Hush up, you little Scalawags" I don't think she meant it in a nice way. Then it was, everything we did , Aunt Fannie would call us those little Scalawags. It got to the point when she talked to my parents on the telephone she would how is that Little Scalawag. I still don't think she meant it with affection. Hence, I became the little"Scalawag". When I first started researching my State Rep. Joseph Ryan Waldrop , I was so proud and dont't get me wrong, I love , adore and proud of him. But, when I found out he was a State Rep. of Washington County, Alabama, Minister , Physician and Justice of the Peace. He also owned a retail store . It was in front of his store that he was ambushed and killed. I just knew then we came from Class and Breeding. Then the stories go on he was married to Nancy Heard, Sarah Catherine Alexander, Victoria K. Thomas and Sarah A. Baxter , who was my gr grandmother, they married in 1867 in Washington County, Alabama. Two of his wives he wasn't divorced from. He had at least two children by all wives except Sarah Cathrien Alexander from Arkansas. But he wasn't a bad man, he was in trouble when he was very young and had to keep moving. It was when Victoria divorced him when she found out he was still married to Sara Catherine Alexander. I have his life story under Who shot J. R. (Our J. R.) I have letters from him and letters to him, some were copied from the Montgomery Archives in Montgomery, Alabama. He was welled loved and respected in Washington County. He was six foot and six inches. He was loved by the women and the men wanted to be just like him. Stories goes you either loved him or hated him. The only way a man could get up the nerve to kill him was to ambushed him , and they did. After the Civil War he fought for Washington County to clean out the Carpetbaggers and the Scalawags, he fought against the colored taking over and robbing and stealing. He fought Judges or anyone who got in his way to help keep the his part of the South from being taken over. JRW went down to his knees, but it took a coward to take him down killing him in a ambushed. I love my gr grandpapa very much thru researching ,I have grown to know and love him. So when I call him a scalawag, I use it with affection, My handle has special meaning for me. I still have tons of information to share about my gr grandpapa. He was was quite a fighter for what he believe, evern to the point while wearing his KKK sheet he beat up the Judge of Probate of Washington County, Alabama. I loved your letter, would you mind if I use it on my Web page. Your remarks were very gracious towards my gr grandpapa. I would love to share the message you sent me today. Thanks Harold. During the county's early years trained medical doctors were few. The practice of medicine was done by lay people who used home remedies. As the county become more populated physicians began to settle in the area. They were among the few educated men of their time and were most often the leaders of a com

MEANING OF THE SURMAME WALDROP AND VARIOUS SPELLINGS.

The surname Waldrop, Wardrop, Wardrope, etc. is occupational in origin, that is, it derives from the trade or profession of the first bearer. The name is from Old Norman French "garder or warder" meaning "to watch" and robe. Therefore the surname derives from the keeper of the royal wardrobe. The man in charge of the clothes of the household was a post of great responsibility. The wardrobe was a repository not only for articles of dress [often trimmed with precious stones], but for furniture not in use, and for spices and confections.de Gothynys acquired a fourth part of Thenstoun.

Other Variations occur as: WAIRDROB 1658, WAIRDROPE 1678, WARDDROP 1509, WARDRAPER 1512, WARDRAPPER 1686, WARDROB 1642, WARDROPAR 1467, WARDROPPER 1509, WARDRUPPER 1582, WODDEROP ca. 1530, WODDROP 1591, WOODROPE (in Abrdeen) 1731, James WARDROP, [surgeon who wrote the "Essays on the Morbid Anatomy of the Human Eye"] born 1782. Genealogical records in America show WALDROOP, WALDREP, WALDRIP, WALTRIP, WALDRUP, WARDROP, WARDROBE, WARDROPE, WADDROP and WALDROP which is the most common spelling of the surname in America.

Okay you aked why Scalawag...the year 1867 is when my gr grandpapa married my gr grandmama December 1867. Here is a letter to me about my "Scalawag" and the following letter is from me telling him I use with price "Scalawag".

My gr grandpapa was married four times divorced twice, all wives were still when he was killed. He was in the KKK, he was State Reprensentive of Washington 1868-70 un Montgomery, Alabama, he was a Minister, Physician, all this has been documented. He beat up the Judge of Probate of Washington while wearing his white sheet. he owned his owned his own business, Justice of the Peace and was in a righteous duel in Mississippi when he was young and had to leave Mississippi and move around, because dues were outlawed in the early 1850s in Mississippi.

He was also mention in the Book, "VICTORIAN LADY ON THE TEXAS FRONTIER" BY ANN RANEY COLEMAN OF WIHITEHAVEN. DR. JOSEPH H. WALDROP WAS ANN RANEY COLEMAN'S SON IN LAW ( ALMOST) JRW, MARRIED ANN'S DAUGHTER VICTORIA K. THOMAS. HE LEFT HER WITH CHILD ABOUT 1858. WHEN SHE DICORCED HIM SHE FOUND OUT HE WAS STILL MARRIED TO ANOTHER SARAH CATHERINE ALEXANDER, OF CRITTENTON, ARKANSAS.

Mama and daddy would take one of my friends to keep me from talking and asking so many questions, like " Are we there yet?" and "When are we going to stop and eat?"

Back to story.

They were among the few educated men of their time and were most often the leaders of a community. Two of these Medical Doctors were our own. 1885 thru 1904, Dr, John Henry Cooper, son of , Nancy Baxter and William J. Cooper. Nancy Baxter Cooper was the sister of our great grandmother Sarah Baxter Waldrop. Dr, Cooper was the fist cousin of our grandpapa James Harry ("Capt. Harry") Waldrop. also, Dr. Joseph Ryan Waldrop until he was ambushed and killed August 13, 1870. He is our gr grandpapa married to Sarah Baxter Waldrop and papa of our grandpapa James Harry Waldrop and Joseph Ryan Waldrop, Jr. Dr. Waldrop was killed in the fall of 1870 and Joseph Ryan Waldrop, Jr. wasn't born until the spring of 1871. James Harry must have been between a year or year and half when the baby was born. James Harry was born in 1869. Loper , Alabama.

JAMES AND JOHN WALDROP, SR, EARLY 1700S WERE BROTHERS, POSSIBLY IN SCOTLAND.

James (b. about 1720 or so, possibly in Scotland, was the BROTHER (not the father) of John Waldrop. Both emigrated to Amelia Co., Va., where they are first found on the Amelia Co. tax list of 1754. They purchased 100 acres of land together in 1759 near the HORSEPEN BRANCH on WINTOCOMAKE Creek Road, just down the road from Joseph Waldrop/Waltrip in Amelia Co., Va. James married Sarah; John married ANNE (not Millicent. A different John married Millicent. Also I have never heard John referred to as Johnson, and, although John had a son named John, I have never seen his name referred to as Johnson.. Neither have I ever seen John's son James with any middle name or initial.)

In 1768, James and John bought (together) land along Pigg River running to the Frying Pan Creek in Pittsylvania Co., Va. James and John then bought land together in Sullivan Co., Tenn (then NC), but before they could move there, James died in 1772 in Pittsylvania Co., Va. John later moved to their joint land in Sullivan Co. with his wife and children.

According to his wiill, James had only ONE child, a son named James, Jr. who was a Private in the Rev. War. (He is often confused with Capt. James Waldrop, son of Luke and Christian [Trevillian] Waldrop. I have never seen the letter "C" used with James Jr's name.) .James Waldrop Jr. married Mary Morrison, and they moved to Putnam and Fayette Cos., Ga.

John Waldrop, James' brother, was born about 1730, probably in Scotland, not Virginia. There is evidence they both were indentured servants, but I do not have proof. I suggested you not guess at the father of John and James, since if they were indentured servants as I suspect they were, then they could not have been the sons of Michael or anyone else who was already in this country when they were first taxed in 1754 in Virginia at the approximate ages of 24 and 34. Had they been born here, they should have been on tax lists from the ages of 21 on.

COLUMBUS BAPTIST ASSOCIATION

ORGANIZED NOVEMBER 22, 1829

Rev. Greem Berry Waldrop was a working member of the Georgia Bptist Association . (Presbytery 1827-1840)

The Columbus Baptist Association was organized November 22, 1829 at Mulberry Meeting Houses then, now known as New Hope Baptist Church, ten miles from here at Mulberry Grove.

Twelve Churches reporting from Talbot, Harris and Muscogee Counties. Churches from Harris County included Bethesda, Mulberry Meeting Hall, Mount Olive and Hamilton Baptist Church , then Lebanon.

UPDATE ON GREEN BERRY WALDROP( Green Berry was in Green County, Alabama in 1822.)

Mr. Walker assumes , Green Berry Waldrop remained in Georgia, and never left and returned. My research found my Green Berry Waldrop in Green County, Alabama in 1822, where he was Baptized by Rev. Joseph Ryan a beloved friend. Green Berry and Elizabeth Waldrop in 1827 named their son Joseph Ryan Waldrop after Rev. Joseph Ryan.. More update, Mr. Walker , question JRW being in Powder Horn Texas, this is found , when JRW and Victoria K. Thomas , the daugter of Ann Rainy Thomas Coleman wrote a book called, "Victorian Lady On The Texas Frontier." Ann Raney was JRW's mother in law and she wrote about the marriage of JRW and her daughter Victoria and they son Joseph Mark Henry Waldrop, born in 1858. She wrote of Powder Horn and Martagorda , Texas. This is where my JRW was when he wrote letters, ( have copies) back home to his his Waldrop family family in DeSoto, Mississippi. I am trying to find the connection why JRW was in Texas. Did he have relatives there?? If so, Who???

There is a Green Berry Waldrup , who is the nephew of Rev. Green Berry Waldrop. The nephew is the son on Major Washington Waldrup.

I received information from Jimmy Waldrop that my Joseph Ryan Waldrop couldn't be his Joseph Ryan Waldrop because I had taken from a 1870 Census that my JRW was born in Mississippi at the time he was 44. This is how I place him being born in 1826/27. The 1870 Census gave his age 44 years old. Green Berry was in Green County, 1822 Alabama, by 1827 Green Berry was in Gwennette County, Georgia. Joseph Ryan Waldrop could have been born in Mississippi, if Green Berry Waldrop visited his brothers in Mississippi and Alabama before he came back to Georgia. The Washington County Census in 1870 has him born in Mississippi, age 44. Green Berry Waldrop and his family lived in Georgia Counties Harris, Talbot and Muscogee form 1827-1840.

Jimmy said, Rev. Green Berry was still in Georgia in 1824 in Gwenette, and he was, there is a picture of his church and in the message below mentions Green Berry Waldrop, Bodi Waldrop , Alsey and Benjamin Waldrop who parted from Green Berry by staying Talapoosa, Alabama , shortly after that picture was taken. Mr. Jimmy Walker insisted Joseph Ryan Waldrop had to be born in Georgia. He might have been, how ever Rev. Green Berry Waldrop was in the Alabama area and close enough to Mississippi for JRW to have been born in Alabama or Mississippi but as I told him on census 1870, the year he was ambushed and killed in Washington County, Escatawpa, Alabama his birth place was listed Mississippi, he was age 44 when he was killed. I found this by researching the for his death and found this information about the killing in the Mobil Register Newspaper.

Sweetwater Primitive Baptist ...organized on December 8, 1824 by Tyre Lamders and G. B. Waldrop. Also Rev. Green Berry Waldrop was a member of the Presbytery. He traveled around with other ministers organizing new Chruches.I have found him thru out my area in Georgia. I live in Muscogee County and he is listed as owning land here, Talbot and Harris Counties, Georgia He owned land all over these areas. He traveled from one area to another this is why I believe Joseph Ryan Waldrop could have been born in Alabama or Mississippi as well as Georgia. He did have on son born in Georgia but Joseph Ryan Waldrop was on up in age. (Henry Low Waldrop was born in 1832 in Harris County, Georgia, Joseph Ryan Waldrop was already six years old.)

Back to Jimmy Walker, Rev. Green Berry was in Georgia until the early 1840s. How ever I have a deed where Green Berry bought land in Alabama in 1823. Rev. Green Berry must have traveled back and forth and was in Alabama and maybe even in Mississippi the time my Joseph Ryan Waldrop was born.

Also Jimmy Walker questioned Matagorda and Powder Horn and Joseph Ryan Waldrop being in both places. I researched Powder Horn and Matagorda and they are very close together. You can find this information also in a book his mother in law at the time wrote and she mention Dr. Waldrop and Dr. J.R.Waldrop as a very like able person. Joseph Ryan Waldrop married Victoria K. Thomas in the Powder Horn, Texas area and then they moved to Matagorda , Texas to live by her mother. They had a son Joseph Henry Mark Waldrop in 1858. In 1859 Dr. Joseph Ryan Waldrop moved on to Arkansas and Victoria came home to deliver JHMW and then divorced my Joseph Ryan Waldrop , just to find he was still married to Sarah Catherine Alexander in Arkansas. He lawyer found JRW was still married to Sara C. Alexander Waldrop.

There are other questions I need to answer Mr. Jimmy Walker that he asked me to send me to send him proof. I am doing that I am sending him the information on Powder Horn and Matagroda Texas. Also, about Rev. Green Berry being in Alabama in 1823 and 1826 in Georgia. Land deeds shows that he goes back and forth, with him having Waldrop relatives in Tuscaloosa and Talapoosa. This man traveled all over the States until the week he died in 1854,

Joseph Ryan Waldrop , traveled as much as his papa, we have found him in La. South Carolina,( mention in one of his letters in 1854 to his brother Henry Low in DeSoto, Mississippi) He also lived in Tubelo, Mississippi, this is where his daughter Georgia Ann Waldrop Thornton was born in 1845 while married to Nancy Heard, they also had a son Stephen Franklin Waldrop who lived in DeSoto, Mississippi. Georgia Ann also lived in Mississippi) Arkansas and Washington County, Alabama.

I still have other questions to answer Mr. Jimmy Walker's wanting to see written information. He also questioned the maiden name of Joseph Ryan Waldrop's mother. I have received information from Faye Waldrop Johnston and Major Washington Waldrup, I believe this is where I received the maiden name of my great great grandmother. Elizabeth Ward was on one of the Ged I received. I will contact Ann Waldrop Johnston and Marshall Waldrup and see if that information came from them.

Mr. Jimmy Walker also question the Joseph R. Waldrop who signed up for the Civil War in 1861 in Canaan, Mississippi is the same JRW or not. I have a nephew with the FBI , I don't know if he can help me or not, but I am going to ask him if he can't have it done at the FBI , if he will find a handwriting expert in Washington D. C for us. I want to verify the signatures of the Civil War Joseph R. Waldrop and the Matagorda, Texas. I

I do not know why Joseph R. Waldrop was in Powder Horn or Matagorda in 1855-1858 but he was there visiting and writing home to his family about the estate of his papa Rev. Green Berry in 1854. His mother Elizabeth Ward Waldrop died in 1866. On census I found another J. R. Waldrop who was born 1834 in Texas who might have been a cousin. There is a eight year difference in their ages. 1934 would have made my Joseph Ryan Waldrop the papa of Georgia Ann Waldrop Thorton born in 1845, that J. R.Waldrop in Texas would have been only 11 years old in 1845. My JRW was visiting in Texas, he wasn't born or raised there.

As always I stand to be corrected. But, after almost ten years, I have learned to have what I enter written down on paper and able to back up.

This is where we stand right now in our line. James Waldrop, Sr.

My Current Research:

Juanita and I are investigating the lives and wives of our great grandpapa Dr. Joseph Ryan Waldrop. Nancy Heard, Sarah Catherine Alexander, Victoria K. Thomas and our great grand mother Sarah Baxter Waldrop.

JRW , as we call him The Scalawag" was married at least four times that we know of and had two divorices recorded.

JRW met our great grandmother in 1866 and married her ins 1867, they were together a few years and we belived he moved on and left Sara Baxter Waldrop and her two sons James Harry and Joseph Ryan Waldrop behind.(CORRECTION: JOSEPH RYAN WALDROP'S OBIT. JOSEPH RYAN WAS AMBUSHED SHOT AND KILLED AUGUST 1870 IN ESCATAWPA, ALABAMA, WASHINGTON COUNTY. THE MURDER WAS RULED AS A RADICAL MURDER.) JOE WALDROP WAS STILL LIVING WITH OUR GREAT GRANDMOTHER AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH.

Dr. JRW was involved in a Duel in the mid 1850s and had to leave his first wife and children. Alto his Duel was call a rightous one , he was still in trouble with the law and had to leave DeSoto Mississippi, DeSoto/Tate County.

First wife Nancy Heard Second wife Sara Catherine Alexander Third wife Victoria K.Thomas Fourth wife Sarah Baxter (our gr grandmother)

He was on the run the rest of his life traveling to South Carolina, Arkansas, Alabama, Texas, Louisana and Mississippi.

1850 Mississippi 1858..Texas

1850 South Carolina Louisana 1866 Alabama(Washington Coutny)

1869-70 JRW was State Rep. of Washington County, in the Montgomery Capatial , Montgomery, Alabama.

He was whild living in Escatawpa, Alabama, Washington County, a Ret. Merchant, KKK, Justice of the Peace, Physician and Minister.

He preached the first message in Methodist Chruch in Escatawpa, Alabama, Washington County.

JRW was six foot six inches, had dark hair and dark eyes. Was a big man and demanded respect with the sound of his voice. People were in awa of him when he came to Escatawpa, Alabama where very few men at that time was over five foot eight. He was out spoken and backed up what he believe in. He beat up the Judge of Probate while still in his KKK robe when Judge McCarthy stepped off the train. The Judge had boutht in carpetbaggers and supported them. Joseph Ryan Waldrop beat the Judge and disfigured his face. The Judge reconized JRW becuse of his height and his deep voice.

Rev. Green Berry Waldrop Ministered at Bethel Baptist Church form 1832-1839.Bethle Baptist is out our back door. Welive on Midland Chase Loop, just about a mile from Flat Rock Road where the Bethle Baptist Church has been there since 1850. The Church behind the new 1850 Church was blown down by wind and an electrical storm. The wood church was flaten. The church and the land it right out Jan's back door.

It's a wonderful feeling to be able to drive up and stop the car and know you are on the land where your gr gr grandpapa walked around and ministered unto people. Over a hundred and sixty three years ago. He not only was a minister but he was on the Presbytery and help constituted new Churches and Ordained and Baptized new ministers into their call. He was on the board and help organize a School, "Shoals" in Harris County. He was on the Grand Jury in Muscogee County. He came to Muscogee and Harris County, by the way of the 1827 Lottery. He owned quite abit of land. He own hundreds of acres of land just as you step over the Harris County into Muscogee County, Georgia.

Rev. G. B. Waldrop was also on the Columbus Baptist Association. He help constitue the Columbus Baptist Accociation which started in the Mulberry Meeting House in Harris, then it was changed to the New Hope Baptist Church then it changed to Mount Olive Baptist Church in the still Mulberry Comunnity. (GBW was on the Board of the Columbus Baptist Association.)

GBW left Harris and Muscogee County in 1840 and moved to DeSoto/Tate County, Mississippi, where he lived and ministered to his Baptist Chruches. He was written up in the Tenn. Baptist Association, His obit read how well loved he was and how he loved and served his Lord and Master. He left a wife Elizabeth Ward, three sons Joseph Ryan , Henry Low and McDonald Waldrop and one sister Nancy Caroline Waldrop,(Higgingbothan)One granddaughter Georgiane Elizabeth Waldrop Thornton, a granson Stephen Franklin Waldrop a gr granddaughter Jimmy Ann Thornton(Scott)

Green Berry Waldrop grandchildren and great granddaughter were the children and grandchild of Joseph Ryan Waldrop. Georgiane and Stephen Waldrop belonged to Joseph Ryan Waldrop and Nancy Heard Waldrop. Jimmy Ann Thornton Scott was the daughter of Georgia Ann.

They later move to Alabama and settled in DeSoto, Mississippi, DeSoto.Tate County.

The children of Rev. Green Berry and Elizabeth Ward Waldrop were Joseph Ryan, Henry Low, McDonald and Nancy Caroline Waldrop Higgingbottom.

JOHN WALDROP SO FAR FIRST GENERATION:

JOHN WALDROP,SR.

This John Waldrop (Jr) who served in the Rev. War was the son of John Waldrop(Sr) of Amelia County, Virginia. John Sr and his brother James, also of Amelia, took their families to Pittsylvania Co., Va (where James died). John then took his family to Washington/Sullivan Co., NC (now )Tenn. John Sr. and some of his sons moved frequently thereafter--to Greenville Co., where sons John Jr (the Rev War John mentioned in this posting) and Eli (aka Ila, Ely) finally settled; and Spartanburg Cos., SC, where James, Benjamin and Ezekiel owned adjoining land; All left there, and John Sr finally settled in Rutherford Co., NC where he died.

John Waldrop Sr's sons are described below, as best I could obtain information from my research. I am not sure of their birthdates, since I had to estimate the dates in some cases. Although the original spelling of this family's surname was Waltrip, as they moved around, the spelling varied from Waldrop(e), Waldroup, Walthrop, Waldrip (in southern states), etc. SONS OF JOHN WALDROP, SR.

JOHN WALDROP, JR. Born 1753. (John's pension application claims he was age 79 in 1832. In 1810, he was over age 45 according to the census.) After the Rev. War, John removed to Greenville Co., SC, where he lived until he died. His will says he had only one son, John Waldrop, Jr., who removed to Georgia, and one daughter; However, his administration records prove he had three children. ELI (aka ILA, ELY) WALDROP. Est. birth 1755. (Born between 1750-1760, according to censuses.) After the Rev. War, Eli settled in Greenville Co., SC near his brother, John Jr. He died there in 1845. He had two sons and four daughters.

ISAIAH WALDROP. Est. birth 1757. (Born between 1750 and 1760, according to the census. Some say he was born in 1767, but censuses and his Rev. War muster of 2 Aug 1777 do not support that theory.) By 1790, Isaiah had removed to Rutherford Co., NC and bought land near his father. Soon after, he moved his family to Wilcox Co., AL, where he lived until he died in 1867 (sic). He had three sons and one daughter.

EZEKIEL WALDROP. Est. birth 1759/1760. (Born between 1760-1770, according to censuses.) In 1810 and 1820, Ezekiel was living in Rutherford Co., NC with his family, which included 2 sons under ten. By 1830, he had moved to Haywood Co., TN, where he died after 1840. In 1830, his two sons, then ages 20-30, according to the census, were still living in their father's home. In all, he had seven sons and possibly some daughters.

JAMES WALDROP. Est. birth 1761. (Born between 1765 and 1784, according to 1810 census; Born by 1761 if age 21 when he bought land in 1782. Since land records are considered to be more accurate than censuses, the 1761 birthdate is probably correct.) Died about 1820 in Russell Co., Va. He is said to have served in the Rev. War. (No proof.) He had twelve children; The names of five of them unknown.

BENJAMIN WALDROP. Born 1762/3. (Born between 1760-1770, according to censuses.) Still living at home in 1790. By 1798, Benjamin had married Ailsey Huggard
